Hello Spanner/ community, I am trying to install PCUAE for a week now. The C64maxi will not start in Project Carousel mode. It keeps displaying the helpmenu. Now I erased all from my laptop again, to try and install it again, but the downloads disappeared from Projectcarouselusb.eu. What to do? On YT there is a how to video posted from two years ago, but I reckon that isn't up to date anymore? What How- to to follow. Sorry for writing this, but I really don't know what to do anymore. Can someone help me? Where do I find the latest info voor 3.2.0?

Carousel Gamelists(Game Views) in PCUAE are in the `THEC64-CAROUSEL-GAMES` folder on the root of the PCUAE USB Drive, in PCUAE Manager its pointing to the wrong folder. The target folder in the export games to carousel says `G:/Games` when it should be `G:/THEC64-CAROUSEL-GAMES` can this be changed please in PCUAE Manager...? I guest I could make a work around and if games do go to the `G:/Games` folder they get automatically copied to `G:/THEC64-CAROUSEL-GAMES` before PCUAE boot up the carousel so it check they are in the right folder. You can accidently export the games on the usb to the wrong folder, I changed its name so we know its for THEC64 only and not THEA500 because PCUAE supports THEA500 as well now. Any new models that RGL release thats part of THEC64 Models or THEA500 Models I will try and add support for in PCUAE...

Hey I don't know if you can help, I did have a scan through this post, but a lot of pages, I might have overlooked it. I am predominately using your package for the C16 / Vice side of things, as I have a real C64c and a C64 Ultimate Elite [but growing up on a C16 first, then the C64, then the Amiga 500, I figured I'd get C16 setup perfect, then move on the A500 for my nostalgia needs] I am using the joystick that comes with the maxi, but randomly, I don't know what button combo I'm pressing, it switches to the C64, then loads up what appears to be a BBS system/setup (something I've never used when I was younger, so I don't know what it is) I can press CTRL and 4 to get back to the C16, but I'm wondering if it's an option I can turn off/tweak, so when I'm on the C16, I just stay there? I tried CTRL+/ (forward slash) to turn off the CTRL, didn't seem to work, as I could CTRL and 3 to to get to C64 although I couldn't CTRL and 4 to get back to the C16/Plus4, but when I pressed and held CTRL and / again (think i"m turning it back on) I got an '>>ERROR<<' and it dropped back into C64 then I could get back into Plus 4, so I guess I did turn it back on?
Edit: another time I did this, I got the >>ERROR<< but it just sat there, so I powered it up, let it go through the motions and then it took me too back to the Striketerm 2014
Also, I notice on my maxi (again, it might be your setup/config) if I press the right shift, it cursors back, when I was a kid, I'd do right shift and O for the L[shiftO] to load. These old hands are having a challenge reaching across with my thumb on left shift, and the pinky on O. Keep up the good work and I hope you can help me in my troubles.
Edit: it did it again even with the CTRL and / set, it did like a weird reset, then switched to C64, then loaded up Striketerm 2014 (whatever that is)

BBS boards is the internet on the C64, you add a ethernet or wireless adapter to THEC64 in PCUAE to use the internet via BBS boards, like in the 80s, that are on the internet now, users still make them now.
The Telnet BBS C64 Mode option should be CTRL+F1 on the keyboard and Menu+A on THEC64 joystick, your probably pressing the combination by accident.
CTRL and / might have a bug in it and its not turning the shortcut off so will need to look into it.

I just checked CTRL+/ and had C16 plus/4 Model loaded in VICE Mode and it works so stops the Shortcut key selector so you can use the number keys on the top row but autoloads VIC20 Model for some reason when it should be the last Model used originally, weird, it must be a bug in it I didn't see when I rewrote the VICE Mode script so need to check it now and see where its going wrong and why it loading the wrong Model.

Great progress, I suppose. But as a new user it's very hard to begin. The wiki is quite overwhelming, just like this forum.
Is there a quick-guide for new users on how to install this? Shall I download all the three above, or just the manager?
Can I use my C64 (maxi) for both C64 games and Amiga games?

How to install PCUAE=====================Make sure that the USB Drive you pick is formatted in Fat32 and in MBR(do not use GPT it will not work) , You can use a 8, 16, 32, 64 and 128GB USB Drive with THEC64 models and THEA500 and PCUAE should be OK to install on them too, I use a 64GB SD card with mine, you can even use a Sata Sold State Drive, 250GB or lower, just make sure it formatted with MBR and FAT32 then it will work.NOW First, download `PCUAE Manager` from github.com/CommodoreOS/PCUAE-Update/releases/download/pcuae-update/pcuae-manager-3.3.1-setup.exe (right click on link and copy if not working, if you click on it)(New Updated Version)or `Download PCUAE` from the `Website`, it here... projectcarouselusb.euYou install `PCUAE Manager` the same way you do with `PCUAE`, but pick a location on your `PC` not on the `PCUAE USB Drive`, it will `install to the C/: drive` under `C:\Games\PCUAE\PCUAE-Manager` folder, if you do not change it, once its installed click on its icon on the desktop to load `PCUAE Manager`.Once `PCUAE Manager` has opened you might see a box appear saying new version of PCUAE Manager then update itThen you will see another box appear saying new version of `PCUAEvXXX is available` then you run PCUAE from that box that comes up and it will download it then you can install it to a USB Drive but you can use the `PCUAE Tab` if you want as well.To use the `PCUAE Tab` Click on it and you will see `PCUAE Install to a USB drive`, click on that item.`PCUAE Manager` will then ask `do you want to download PCUAE`, then click on `Yes Button` and it will start `downloading the latest version of the PCUAE` it will not take long then it will ask: `do you want to install PCUAE`, click on `Yes button again` to start the setup so you can `install PCUAE to the your USB Drive`. now just read what the installer says and pick the drive letter of your USB Drive you want PCUAE installed on and then wait for it to finishing installing PCUAE.`PCUAE Manager` notifies you if there is a new version of the `PCUAE` when it becomes available on GitHub.Running PCUAE for the first Time on THEC64 Models=============================================================Make sure the carousel from the firmware has loaded and PCUAE USB stick is in one of the USB ports on the machine and you can see the USB Icon on the screen.**On THE64 Mini/THEC64/THEVIC20:**1. Select `Spanner` Icon(Device Settings) then press Left Fire then select `System Information` then press Left Fire again, you will see a `Fake Update` in there called `theC64-9_9_90.bin`.2. Now select `Apply Button` and then press Left Fire again, PCUAE will start and you will see a black screen for about 5 or 10 seconds and you should see a blue screen on the screen and its saying:Yes PCUAE install is Running Please wait...
OK... Running PCUAE setup don't interrupt this process...
It reboots when finished the setup...
Please wait, this might take a while...
Setting up Project Carousel USB - Anniversary Edition... and it should check if the autoboot startup script is installed on the firmware and if it not then copy it to it to activate Autoboot Mode so PCUAE can boot by itself. It should take about 40 seconds for PCUAE setup itself to boot up and show the first carousel, it will boot into carouselv1.6.1(Maxi Carousel) in PCUAE Mode but only if you have exported Favorites 1, it only needs Favorites 1 Gamelist View to load into PCUAE Mode if Favorites 1 Gamelist is not added to the PCUAE USB Drive then PCUAE Mode is disabled and TheCarousel Firmware from the machine that PCUAE is running on will load and its games instead.PCUAE will need to be installed on a USB Stick/SD Card 1GB or greater and from inside PCUAE Manager, its the easiest way to install PCUAE, you can use the PCUAE Menu too thats on GitHub as well, it includes PCUAE All In One Version.

Would it be possible to add games for the Amiga(THEA500 Mini) to `PCUAE Manager`, the files are in `.lha format` and are available to download via a ftp server... ftp2.grandis.nu/ and its Amiga games are here... ftp2.grandis.nu/turran/FTP/Retroplay%20WHDLoad%20Packs/ they are all in lha, so you could download them from there to the `PCUAE Manager` then export them to `USB Media Access`(yes it is the same as THEC64) on THEA500, you could export them like how `PCUAE Manager Exports to File Loader` the C64 games but Amiga games instead, the .lha games are `WHDLoad games`, it uses `The WHDLoad AutoBooter in Amiberry` to load each game in the USB Media Menu because THEA500 mini uses `Amiberry emulator` to run the games on THEA500 Mini... github.com/BlitterStudio/amiberry/wiki/WHDLoad-Auto-bootinginside `PCUAE` there is a folder for adding `Amiga games` so you see them in the `USB Media Menu`, its called... `PCUAE USB Drive:\THEA500-USB-MENU\THEA500-Games` its in `PCUAE AIO version`. You could make tabs for THEC64 and THEA500 in `PCUAE Manager` for different stuff. What do you think, Lantz...?

I've been trying to get plus4 (or c16) to work for a while now, but to no success. I tried PCUAE - All in One and also pcuae-3.3.5-main-4all-no-modes-no-games-standalone-setup followed by pcuae-vice-mode-pack-v3.3.4-setup. That last one just tells there are no games (which I don't want anyaway) and then loads the built in caroussel.
What steps did you take to get it to work as a plus4?
Also, just as to check. You're not talking about the 4-plus-1 software that's built into the plus/4, are you, that kinda looks like a terminal. F1 types out "sys1525", which boots this.

Shall I download all the three above, or just the manager? Can I use my C64 (maxi) for both C64 games and Amiga games? I agree. I'm looking for just a quick and short list of bullet points steps to install ALL of this thing. Like 10 steps or something and the complete steps to do it so very short that it all fits on the screen at once. Just a quick install for dummies type deal, where we can get it all up and running and worry about all the features or modifications we can do later on. Every time I get in the mood to try it out I look at the long pages of instructions and put it off for another day because I have other things I want to also do. Not criticizing all the effort put into this. Just hoping somebody does a video or something to walk through it fast, along with showing how emulators are launched. I'm stuck at boot where it says I'm missing the favorites file. Not sure how to select those. Can you select everything? Also it appears it's installed autoboot which I didn't want to do because I don't want to alter the firmware. I'd rather manually launch it from the About System menu. How do you change it back? I also don't see any changes to the carousel or options there. And how do you launch emulators, by navigating the USB directory? I've set up retro pi on a pi and Batocera on an old PC both from scratch so I sort of know my way around front ends and emulators, but that's thanks to watching enough how to videos. I'm surprised nobody has done it for this. Haven't been able to find any but maybe I'm missing it?

That would be great. After searching a bit I did find this install video that also covers some features at the end, but it's a couple years old and I don't know if it all still applies to the current version. It also doesn't cover using Game Manager and the what and why of using that. It just shows it being installed on the USB, which btw takes a while so you might want to skip ahead some in the video to where that part finishes.
Main thing I'm interested in now is how to use game manager, how and why to pick favorites and export that file because at boot it says it's missing, how to install the various emulators for Atari, Amiga, etc, and how to launch them, and how to turn off Auto Boot so the stock firmware isn't altered.
Also a a quick overview on some other platform packages you can set up such as WHDLoad for the Amiga, One Load or whatever it's called for the C64, Vic20 packages, and so on.
Probably asking a lot but anything would be helpful, especially using emulators and how to use game manager. Maybe there's already a video on that? I'm going to do some more looking.
Edit: My clipboard isn't working at the moment for some reason so I can't post a link to the video, but if you look on Retronut's channel you'll see a video two years old with a picture of the white TheVic20 joystick in the thumbnail.

Yea a long time ago I had installed one of the first versions of it but that was before Game Manager came along and I think all the mini and maxi versions are just one program now and not separate ones? A lot of ground to cover. I'm sure it's probably all pretty easy but just getting started and installing everything at first is the issue.

Thanks for that. I'm going to check it out later. I did manage to find a few videos on Game Manager or Game Tool or whatever it's called. Not really interested in building my own carousel or creating a favorites list. I'd rather just use whatever packages people put together for now. Maybe down the road I'll put together a favorites list.
Main issue right now is every time it autoboots (which I want to turn off and not alter the firmware) it says no favorites list exists and I see no games switching options in the carousel. I also noticed when I went to the USB icon it says it can't read the USB. This is the same USB I had a very old version of project carousel on before and it worked fine then. I didn't reformat the USB so I know that's not an issue. I only deleted everything on it and installed the new version.
I'm also still wondering how emulators are launched. Is it done from a menu or is it done by navigating the USB icon and launching something from there? Haven't found any videos covering these details. The few I have found just show the emulator booting into whatever platform it's emulating and the game being played. They left out the best part! Lol.
Incidentally one of the few videos on emulating other platforms I ran across shows the A500 running Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, and PSP games. Pretty impressive. I know the A500 mini is a bit more powerful than the C64 mini or maxi but I didn't expect to see that.
I'm using the C64 mini so just curious what newer generation consoles or arcade era is beyond it's ability to run at full speed? Luckily I'm mainly into the older gaming era of computers, consoles, and arcade and not really interested in anything newer than the early 1990's at most. Right around the time 3D shooters like Doom started becoming popular I lost interest in these next generation games. Much prefer older platformers, galaga style games like 1942, racing games, and war strategy board style stuff.
Never owned a Vic20 but I get a kick out of playing games on even that computer just because it's cool to see what kind of performance they could squeeze out of it. For it's day it was pretty impressive. Better sound and graphics than a Atari 2600, which I also love. I'm looking forward to exploring the entire Atari 8 bit computer and console line, Spectrum, Amiga (owned an Amiga 500 back then), and a few others. Yeah I can already do that on a Pi or Batocera PC setup but for some reason being able to push this C64 mini into running these classic retro platforms has much more appeal to me.

I'm going to make a video covering installation for everyone who is confused. I'll post it in this thread and allow the software author to link it on Youtube. The process is relatively simple, but the instructions and descriptions can be confusing for non-technical folks. There are a lot of undefined concepts. That being said, I'm having an issue. Steps to replicate on TheC64 Maxi: - Copy PCUAE to USB using the Tools menu. Finished successfully. - When promted to install gamelists, select all available lists from the left side menu. Add them to the right side by clicking the arrow button. Finished successfully. - Boot into PCUAE via Information Menu using the fake Firmware Update. Let the installer work. Automatically reboots. - After reboot, it now boots into the Carousel using the Favorites gamelist. I can pick and play games just fine. However, when pressing CTRL + F1 to change the gamelist; I get a black screen playing various music. I have let this screen sit for over an hour and nothing changes. I can not reboot the machine with CTRL + RESTORE, and I have to power cycle by holding the side switch. Sometimes there is a mouse cursor on the top left of the screen. Sometimes not. When there is a cursor, after a few minutes the machine just returns to the Favorites gamelist on the Carousel.
I have attempted to change the gamelist about 5 times with 3 different USB sticks. I have not change any settings from default. Am I doing something wrong, or is there any log file I can provide to help troubleshooting?
EDIT: I was able to fix this myself.
DO *NOT* EXPORT the 'All Games' gamelist. There is a limit of 254 games / titles on the Carousel menu.
DO EXPORT the 'Favorites' gamelist, as it is required to be the default list.
While my issues with the gamelist changer seem resolved, it's random if the games will launch or not. I just reboot until it's in a good state. It's not consistent, same behavior with multiple USB sticks.

Back after a long hiatus....Quick Guide
1. Install PCUAE Manager to PC 2. Follow prompts to download PCUAE 3. Follow prompt to install PCUAE to a new formatted USB drive 4. Downloaded some modes and installed. 5. Exported the game lists except favourite (ERROR) 6. Booted PCUAE on TheVic20 7. Black Screen (No Favourite) 8. Changed Carousel Favourite gamelist with CTRL+F1 to a different one 9. Reboot and Carousel works fine 10. Power down, eject USB and re run PCUAE Manager and add the missing Favourite Folder in export 11. Reboot PCUAE on TheVic20 - fine 12. Try some modes with Mode menu CTRL+F3
**** Bug found with VICE Mode - The PET will not load, black screen but the others all work.
Otherwise a few lock ups and reboots but mostly does a huge amount. Thanks Nick.

Hey guys, first of all thanks for all the hard work making this project. Somebody's got some smarts and talent but it's not me. I'm just a dummy trying to stumble through this and wow, did somebody say overwhelming? After some wrong turns I found myself using this PCUAE Manager, and after many, many, many USB installations on Many different drives, after many hours... I can get the PCUAE Carousel to load exactly one time after all the blue screen installations. If I shut down and reboot it gets as far as the Loading PCUAE screen for about 30 seconds and then just a black screen.
About the 10th installation, I got the idea to pull the plug and copy the USB files for comparison. So the first thing I discovered was there is a file .systeminfo\pcuae-mode-thec64-boot-log.txt that is created and is always corrupt. But this is not what causes the black screen. It is a file created in THEC64-CAROUSEL-GAMES\switch.sh that seems to be the problem. If I delete the file and reboot the C64, the PCUAE carousel loads again, but just for one time. I have to delete the file every time to boot up.

There's no errors on the USB drives, same story on multiple drives. Formatted with the tool from PCUAE site. After initial blue screen setup; pulled the power and drive after reboot screen, no errors and backed up data, no file errors, put back in C64, boot up PCUAE carousel for first time and games load fine, shut down C64, reboots to black screen, put USB drive in PC, Drive has errors, corrupt boot log file, delete switch.sh file, put back in C64, carousel loads for one boot cycle only... rinse and repeat...
Also this C64 Mini was hacked a while back, it's on fw 1.6.1 and has a bunch of extra games on the internal storage. Another thing, I'm not using the joystick. I'm using a USB SNES type gamepad which works fine for all the games but doesn't actually have buttons A&B mapped to anything so I have to use a keyboard to launch the carousel menu.

Are you using a power supply that has enough amp delivering ability? Not doing that can cause random unrelated errors and also slow down things like booting or changing carousels. Forget what they recommend (is it 2.5 or even 3.5 amps?) for project carousel but I do know people recommend using a higher amp power supply than what Retro Games Ltd recommends for both the mini and maxi even if using the stock firmware, and especially if you've got extra things plugged in like keyboards or larger size usb sticks.
A general rule of thumb for most power supplies for most things in life is always strictly follow recommended voltage inputs or you could fry it, but higher amp delivering ability is usually a good thing because a device will only draw the amps it needs and if it's drawing at or near what the device demands in amps the power supply could fail or get hot. And unfortunately many power supplies these days coming from China are rated at slightly higher amps then the components really should be handling to save a few pennies.
If you have a power supply fail within a year or two that's probably why. They're counting on you to expect that as normal and simply but another one in a couple years. The constant running at higher than normal temps eventually causes any electronics to fail.
There's probably a good reason why the Raspberry Pi foundation sells their own official power supplies. Not sure, those might even be made in China but many companies send over observers during manufacturing to make sure they aren't doing things like skimping on wire gauges.
In the electric RC plane industry sometimes they'll contract to churn out a brand name brushless motor and once the production order is met they'll use the equipment already setup to build it but do things like using cheaper wire windings to crank out a bunch of counterfeits. Then people pay big bucks for a slightly cheaper brand name motor and wonder why it burns out when the official brand name specs said they could run a certain size prop on it without risking over amping the motor.
Even with USB cables you have to be careful. I had a raspberry pi I was trying to power with the correct amp rates power supply and it kept flashing low voltage warning. After swapping out about five USB cables in my junk box o finally found one that it liked.
