Hello Nick,
I will try this today - before I do the concrete procedure how I understood this:
1. update the PCU version on the stick to the latest version. 2. plugin the stick into TheC64 and booting the new version on TheC64. 3. Go to PCU Options and enable autoboot - in case it shows already "enabled", then "disable" autoboot and reboot the machine with stick plugged in ? is this safe?
Does'nt this brick TheC64 completly, because it now can't boot from the stick anymore plus it's allready not booting into original firmware because of the broken bootscript ? Or does the "disable" alone fix also the previous Bootscript problem... Just in case, I want to be sure, not to break the machine completly.
Thank you,
Greetings, A.

You just remove Autoboot then wait for it to reboot then firmware should boot cause the script is removed, then start PCUAE with fake update

Installed 1.9.1b1 on pcu stick - autoboot and script were installed before with 1.9.0b7
- boot without pcu stick -> not booting into RGL firmware - first boot with pcu 1.9.1b stick plugged in went OK straight into pcu carousel. - Entered PCU Options and add/remove bootscript. It says: no autoboot and bootscript installed - installed it and machine restarted back into the pcu carousel - turned off TheC64, plugged out pcu stick, started THeC64 -> not booting into RGL firmware - plugged in pcu stick 1.9.1b - TheC64 boots into pcu carousel again - Entered PCU Options and add/remove bootscript. It now says: autoboot and bootscript installed - removed the script and machine restarted -> now finally into RGL firmware - executed fake firmware update 9_9_0 and machine restarts back into Bootscript installer. It says: no autoboot and bootscript installed - installed it and machine restarted back into the pcu carousel - turned off TheC64, plugged out pcu stick, started THeC64 -> now it's finally booting into RGL firmware again. I can confirm the new script is working - will test the options today evening.
Thank you for fixing this :-)
greetings, A.

Thank God... I hate playing around with it sometimes cause it can act weird, I changed Autoboot in the beginning so the Autoboot script was not been ran before the RGL script for starting built-in carousel, it was starting Autoboot first before the RGL script so every now and then you would see it boot up in between it booting PCUAE so would see the splash screen appear of a second or the built-in carousel, it now dose not do this cause Autoboot runs now after RGL script.

Installed all the MOD packs today, but tested only the AMIGA MOD. Here my thoughts:
That's a great MOD, but as much as I really like to see AMIGA emulation an TheC64, there seems to be some issues.
- The main issue is the SOC on TheC64 seems not fast enough for fluid AMIGA emulation. That's not much fun actually with around 8 FPS. Maybe this can be optimized in the future, or is there no issues at all and I used only wrong settings?! - the picture on the TV has actualy a weird landscape mode and is not fullscreen. maybe this can be fixed in the semulator ettings menu. - CTRL + F1 actually lets restart the TheC64 but not seeing the Frameskip Menu described in the Wiki.
greetings. A.

Just testing at 1 frame a second and playing Star Trek Rap in Octamed v6, it plays it better now, but you can hear it slow down a bit but it not to bad, it probably the H3 and the 256 mb ram, when you enable Amiga Mode it enables all 4 cores in the H3 so it can handle it, in PCUAE mode only 2 are enabled to match the A20 SoC in THEC64 Mini. I will see what 2 frames sound like now with the new settings, it default is 3 frames a second cause was not sure if it could handle the Amiga at full speed, but you can change it to your likening, skipping 3 frames now with the new settings seems to fast for it now and speeds up the emulator. I have change the resolution from 640x512 to 720x284, the same resolution Amiberry uses cause P-UAE uses the same source code from WinUAE so both use the same settings, only started looking into Amiberry when I started looking into the A500 Mini and working out how it works, I get mine on Friday 8th... so I do plain on hopefully porting Amiga Mode from PCUAE to the A500 Mini, well that will be the first thing I will do cause it does not have a proper Workbench so you will be able to load WHDLoad games inside it too, like you can now with Tiny Launcher, I am not that bothered about A500 carousel at the moment, not even sure if you can add games to it, it looks like RGL(Chris Smith) have stop you doing it by compressed everything in to one file, why, I guess its about updates and money, update costs them money to make, they say that, and so want control over what games are added to the A500 Carousel. if a update has a game included then you more likely download it and updated the machine to play the game. PCUAE properly helped THEC64 sell more units, it was never made to hurt it at all, I made it to made the machine better not damage it, total users on the Official PCUAE website at the moment are 4196 so it must be helping it ... Look how the PS Classic was before it got hacked, users hated it, cause you can use AutoBleem or Project ERIS on it now and add your own games to its carousel the console started to sell, you can by it in CEX for ÂŁ40 now, when its RRP was ÂŁ89, the problem with the PS Classic was it was made to make money only and Sony didn't put any heart into it so all the games were the same and didn't think of some of the games was going to be to slow cause of different regions(PAL/NTSC), like Tekken 3 thats the European version so PAL version so will run slow in the US version of the PS Classic cause it runs at 60hz and is NTSC, silly Sony.. .
When RGL would release a update for THEC64 and update the carousel I would not put it in PCUAE straight away, I would wait about 1 to 2 months before adding it so they would have time of users to download it himself and update there machine. Anyway glad you like PCUAE...

what if you install Amiga Mode... no...

Post by anthonywalters on Apr 6, 2022 18:37:40 GMT
okay I tried and ran into some issues:
I installed 1.9.1b3 on top of 1.9.1b1 on my pcu usb stick, without formatting it, also installed AMIGA Mode 1.9.1b1 from the PCU Manager 2.5.2 afterwards
- PCUAE started with autoboot as expected - Selected Amiga Mode from the Mode Menu - TheC64 restarted in AMIGA mode, but no change in resolution, so the TV still shows this weird landscape mode in Workbench and frameskip still at 3 - I pressed the combination CTRL+F1 to enter Frameskip menu, the screen went black, TheC64 restarted, but no autoboot -> it started in the original RGL Firmware - as suggested now it's not possible anymore to autoboot from the PCU stick, TheC64 boots in RGL Firmware only, tried also my PCUAE backup stick wich worked before but doesn't boot also anymore - I executed the Fake Firmware 9_9_0 and PCUAE starts again. - next checking autoboot in PCU Options menu, it says "autoboot is turned on and script is present" it turned autoboot off afterwards. (it would be great in a future update if you can exit this menu without turning it off) - I enabled autoboot again, restarted TheC64, it boots again only in RGL firnware - Again executed the fake Firmware 9_9_0, then PCU Options, then Autoboot options, add/remove script.. script was present and removed. - Formatted the USB stick again, installed 1.9.1b3 and AMIGA 1.9.1b1 on the fresh formatted stick.
That is the situation where I am now. I have not added the script back again yet
Before I proceed, what could have went wrong?! Why does CTRL+F1 breaks the autoboot?? Is it safe to add the script back again?
greetings, A.

It should be ok now, one of the scripts was missing a line so it was removing the Autoboot start-up script when you enabled Framerate Menu.

Hi Nick,
I can confirm it's working now... I installed 1.9.1b4 along with AMIGA 1.9.1b4 and all the other Modes available.
strange only on first boot with the fake updater it checks and installs the autoboot script and restarted TheC64 (like ever), then into PCU Carousel menu I choose the PCU Mode Options and there, on the screen where it checks all the modes available it tells me that autoboot and autoboot script are not installed. Exit the Options and went to the PCU Options again and checked if autoboot script is installed, it tells me that script installed and autoboot enables. Restarting TheC64 (autoboot works, of course) and went back to the PCU Mode Options, now it shows taht autoboot and script is installed.
- Next I tested the Amiga mode, yes it now shows fullscreen! Perfect! - Tested the Frameskip Menu, it now works and I enabled the frameskip 1 - Inside the frameskip menu the "up" courser key on TheC64 Maxi doesn't work, "down" works.. Joystick controls works, but only up and down, not left and right. Another strange issue: If I choose Exit, without changing the Frameskip, AMIGA mode restarts, went into the usual Amiga Menu (Workbench, TinyLauncher etc) and if I now press CTRL+F3 to Exit back in PCUAE mode it restarts, but no Autoboot and in RGL Firmware. I had to turn TheC64 off and on, then it started again with aztoboot and the message "PCUAE Mode loading" - Testing some AMIGA games. They still show light stutter in scrolling (tested Shadow of the Beast 1) but they are playable. Latency is similat to C64maxi, latency is present but not too bad. Can the frameskip manually be changed by editing a file on the PCU Stick?
Edit: I discovered it myself by checking the files for frameskip on the PCU stick, but I also discovered that all Frameskip files are set to 3, not to different values, so I edited the Franeskip file for Frameskip 1 manually and set the value from 3 to 1, now the scrolling is fluid but the game is really very slow, too slow to enjoy, with sound stutter. The best setting is indeed 3 even if some games has still slowdown. Good for RPG players, bad for action games - well it really depends on the game, some run better, some worse... until you don't overclock the SOC CPU (like you can on the raspberry pi) I assume, we can't expect much more of a performance boost here.. maybe I am wrong... but this is my impression. Well even if overclock works on the CPU, there is always the danger of overheating the CPU without active cooling.
The SOC in the A500 should be much faster, I get mine also tomorrow if all runs well.. Amazon tend to have problems with their own delivery service, a few times a package "vanished" witnout a reason during delivery, and not surprisingly this were all electronic related parts or video games.
- Tested Atari Mode - At first I was stuck on the Test screen, nothing worked (no keyboard, no Joystick controls) until I pressed one of the round buttons on TheC64 stick, the emulator menu shows but again I can only use the down Keyboard key on TheC64, and this time the Joystick doesn't work for menu controls. Exit the emulator from the emulator throws me back on the PCU Mode menu,
- Linux mode worked so far, have to test it further because I had no mouse connected, but again, pressing CTRL+F3 restarts the machine in RGL Firmware mode. Turning TheC64 OFF and ON and autoboot worked again, but now showing "Atari Mode" loading, but loads into PCUAE Carousel.
I will test the other modes later..
greetings A.
Edit 2:
At last I want to tell you a big "Thank you" for constant improving project carousel. For me personal I won't need the extra modes for Amiga, Atari, Retroarch or Linux.. it's nice to have, but it would also be great if PCU were just Commodore 8Bit family related only. I really like the new PCU Manager wich keeps all the Software parts up to date, and it's so easy to update. Also adding games and export them to run in PCU, all very straight forward, also like the autoboot if a stick is present and the RGL boot if the stick is plugged out. I am sure that PCU boosted also sales for TheC64 and to improve the firmware to make the product better or bugfix is the job of RGL. PCU is a "addon" product wich is based on their firmware.. RGL should be happy that there is someone doing the job they should have done in the beginning.
I don't know if it's possible, but they could do the same with TheC64 firmware like they did with TheA500 -> plug in the USB stick, USB stick symbol pops up in carousel, you choose the stick and the carousel gets updated with the games on the stick created with The PCU game manager. Simple - But i guess they won't invest a single cent anymore in further major updates.. Is TheC64 maxi still in production?!Â
With version 1.6.1 the firmware is good, but not optimal. The "speed" Button (stopwatch icon in classic mode) to disable the floppy fastloader still doesn't work right, I report them every year that this function is still broken, what they do.. they add features but not bugfixes, is this so hard to switch the floppy to accurate disk if the speeder is disabled?? A few lines of code I guess...
For me TheC64 is not complete .. What's also missing:
- edit filenames on USB stick inside the classic mode filebrowser - function to create and name a empty disk/tape - a own C64 config screen (Joyport, SID, Model, REU, accurate Diskmode .. ) like on TheA500, one standard wich will be loaded when switching from carousel to classic mode and a own for each file you execute with "autostart" (the rocket symbol) - actual loaded config will be left unchanged if you just insert a new image. - optional - create a set of disks (for multi disk sided games) you can flip/change with the both triangle buttons, without going to the config screen - optional - a tape record button - optional - a virtual MPS801 compatible printer wich creates a graphic file on the USB stick (standard vice function) - (c64 mini) hotkey on the Joystick for open / close the virtual keyboard
Yes I know this can only be done with the firmware sources. Just my personal thoughts.

Hi, I've been fighting it since yesterday and can't fix it I'am using pcuae 1.9.1b4 and I cannot select any other game source in Carousel Gamelist Changer except favorite_1. Even selecting pre-imported games causes a black screen. But despite the black screen when I hit ctrl + f1 and select favorite_1 again even this set of games is not showing - black screen! On another pendrive I installed an earlier version - PCUAE 1.7.6 Standalone and so the same set of directories with games changer works fine. Is this a bug in the latest version? Is it only for me? PS I checked several versions and the last version in which the game carousel change works for me is 1.7.6b8 (+ update). All of the above from 1.8.x to 1.9.1b4 inclusive, the carousel change does not work anymore.

Its not you, some things were loading to quickly in PCUAE so was clashing, it would not load up H to R screen just a black screen, now its loading properly and H to R screen is loading, its a bug from me trying to speed up PCUAE's boot time.
It now has another bug where it can not remember what gamelist you was on after you turn off and turn on again, it loads up Favorites 1 Gamelist on boot up only, can not work out why at the moment.

I made PCUAE like this so you can install the modes you want, so if you want just PCUAE and VICE then you can just install that, thats why I split it up in to parts, I knew not everyone would want all of it, I added Amiga Mode so you can use it until the A500 Mini came out, when it loads Amiga Mode its plays the carousel music from the A500 Mini Carousel... You use Amiga Mode's Workbench on the A500 Mini now too... Hi quick question, I downloaded PCUAE a few days ago and installed it onto USB and it boots up fine on my C64MAXI. I also installed Amiga mode which boots to workbench OK. Some of the keys are swapped however whether I use an USB keyboard or the C64MAXI keys like Q=A, A=Q, W=Z, Z=W, M=;, ,=M etc yet other keys like ERTYDFGHJKLXCVB and number keys work fine. I did edit the retroarch.cfg to disable the hotkeys but it made no difference. How do I fix this please? All the keys work properly in C64 mode.

Thank you that would be great to find a solution because it's working well otherwise. Thank you for your efforts in this project.

I've got the latest PCUAE installed and the last game pack from January and I thought sonic was included in the last pack but I'm not finding it. Am I overlooking it?

I have the following problem, I've been using pcuae on my orange-pi for a while now. This works great, but now I want to use The C64 again. Now I run into the following, I used the usb drive that works well on my o-pi now on my the C64 but now it doesn't work.
Now put a new pcuae 180b1 on it, but it still doesn't work. That's how I used to mess around, nothing worked and then I grabbed the o-pi and (almost) everything worked. I see the retro games screen first and then the pcuae boot screen. I have the feeling that there is something in my boot from the C64. This needs to go out, I'm sure that's the culprit, but I can't get pcuae to work.
Now I don't dare to do a firmware update because of the custom boot of pcuae.
My current version is 152 and I want to upgrade to the latest firmware.
How do I easily get that car boot out of my C64?

If I factory set the c64 , is the boot file original again? So without automatic startup of pcuae?

Okay, thank you. I'll have to try another way.
