I'm just new to this forum and wanted to Say Hello from Germany. I'm 42 years old and I own a C64 Maxi (The C64) - I bought it at release in 2019 or 2020, but never used it so far. Now being sick at home I took it out to play around with. I updated Firmware to the latest (which was already a challenge) and now spent time with PCUAE.
Here is my problem: When using current version and preparing an USB Stick with it (plus moving the Fav Games Carousel) my C64 starts with the "Anniversary Edition" screen and this stays endless - nothing happens! I've tried multiple different USB sticks and redoing everything again and again - no change.
Somewhere in the forum I've found an older Version for direct install (pcuae1.9.1b7-setup.exe) and this one works fine!
Any ideas what could cause the above? For sure I would prefer to work with latest version...

I can confirm: same for me.
I installed pcuae-3.0.5-main-install-setup.exe from PCUAE Manager v 2.10.1 and then put the "Favourite 1" game pack as instructed by the very difficult to read instructions (why do we need multiple text files with randomly capitalized filenames that repeat the same message?). After preparing the USB stick I "updated" THEc64 using the fake 9_9_90 firmware. After that, THEC64 boots, the original carousel music starts playing and the "PCUAE Carousel USB Anniversary Edition" blue splash screen appears. After about 3 minutes the music stops and THEC64 is simply stuck on the splash screen forever.
But that's not all!
After you reboot, without the USB drive, THEC64 boots into the original firmware carousel, but when you try to run any game from that carousel there are performance problems now. The framerate is slowed down and the audio is stuttering. Rebooting, powering down or using the factory reset doesn't fix this. It's not possible to fix this in any manner other than by following the unbricking guide. The current version of PCUAE effectively breaks THEC64.
And now I'm off to unbricking my THEC64 for the 2nd time today.

The latest version has a few bugs so stay on pcuae1.9.1b7 for now (amiga mode & Retroarch mode does not work too well unfortunately on this build) 1.8.5bf10 works well with all the modes except online mode, if you do switch to this version then remove the autoboot script first from the version you are currently on before installing it. For the modes on1.8.5bf10 you will need to also install the assets from PCUAE-1.8.0b1 assets from PCUAE-1.8.0b1

Hello, I also have a problem. I have PCUAE Manager 2.10.1. When I try to boot the machine from the prepared USB stick it asks if I want to install autoboot script. After that system reboots and completely hang up on Carousel logo. Same problem occurs on my C64Mini and full size TheC64.

For the Maxi Or try pressing CTRL+F5 and see if you can get back to the options screen and remove auto boot script. Failing that try ctrl & F3 for the carousel changer and then in the options change to what ever version of the carousel your mini and maxi is using. It may then boot into the carousel where you can then get into options and remove the autoboot script and go back to stock firmware.
For the mini using the joystick buttons Menu+Right Fire 2 Button – PCUAE Options Menu – A menu with options in it for PCUAE Mode. Menu+Left Triangle Button – Carousel Version Changer

WHere do I get it from and what needs to be done? I would be also fine and create a new USB stick from scratch if you guide me from where to get the needed file Update: Forget about my question - I've found 1.8.5bf10 on github

Little update... With 1.8.5bf10 my screen stays black after the PCUAE intro... Not sure if my C64 Maxi is screwed up because of the latest buggy version or if it's something else. Any ideas?

You need to remove the auto boot script using the version of PCAUE you used to install it before trying a different version of PCUAE or it most likely won’t work. Different versions of PCAUE use different autoboot scripts where it looks for specific files to load and they are not always the same with each build .

Re-Install the version of PCAUE to a usb stick you used to first try PCAUE on your maxi and plug it in then power on. When the carousel boots or the screen goes black try pressing ctrl and F7 to access the options menu and remove the auto boot script from there. If that doesn't work try pressing ctrl & F3 to access the carousel changer and change it to carousel 1.61 then re-boot. If the carousel appears on re-boot then press ctrl & F7 and try the options again and select remove autoboot. If this still doesn't work then maybe Nick can help you he may have a few other ideas and other ways to get back into the menus. Hope this helps.

I was able to uninstall the auto boot now. Thanks for the guidance
However my C64 does weird things - it's booting twice (it's up and then does another sort of reboot including the logo again) and it does not recognize an USB Stick in most of the cases. I need to restart multiple times and do factory resets, then at some point my USB Stick is recognized. My feeling is that PCUAE did damage my system!

After a quick test i have found that there maybe an issue with PCUAEv3.0.5 not removing the autoboot script properly and it may cause the re-booting if an earlier boot script has also been added. I have reported it on another post so will wait and see what Nick Says? For now you could also try a using a Sandisk usb stick ( I know they work 100%) and also try a better power supply of at least 2.5 amp. If you can get a 3 amp power supply then even better as re-booting could also be a power issue.

It has helped me to recover my Maxi to the original condition after 3.0.5 broke it.

That’s the last resort if all else fails but usually Nick posts a fix and there is no need for a full reflash of the firmware. Glad you got it sorted though 👍

Latest beta 3.1.0 works fine when using 1.05 carousel, but with 1.61 it just fails. I mean the ctrl-f3 carousel changer. Can you add other carousel firmware with joystick swapping as 1.05 wont let me swap joystick.
