Spannernick and jj0 have setup all the tools and files to rescue a C64 Maxi if you have messed up the firmware with dumb changes like editing the games inside the firmware a bit too much. (I know I did). The info on how to rescue is in several posts and I thought I should give the QUICK version here - please find the details in the respective threads. I just rescued my C64 Maxi exactly the same way: You need: * A Windows PC (Linux will also work but these instructions are for the lowest common denominator) * A USB A to USB A type cable that you can plug into a USB port on your PC AND on your C 64. You most likely do not have this and will have to buy one. * A copy of "NandB" - at the time of writing provided by Nick here in the folders named "Nand Backup"... onedrive.live.com/?authkey=%21ABhy1XUuzXpmo74&id=DE6843E1C82A96C8%2138859&cid=DE6843E1C82A96C8* The FEL Rescue boot software - at the time of writing provided by jj0 here: onedrive.live.com/?authkey=%21AP7Wb4Ye4W%2D1mOw&cid=E74A8F604C4D006C&id=E74A8F604C4D006C%218312&parId=E74A8F604C4D006C%218300&action=locate* USB Drivers from here: zadig.akeo.ie/* A Windows Disk Imager, the one here is confirmed as working: sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/So this is the shortened step by step: * Remove all cable from the Maxi. * Take a screwdriver, take out the three screws at the bottom of the C64. * Plug the USB A cable into your PC * Press the "FEL mode" button on the board of the C64 Maxi, it is a very small button directly under the empty white socket on your left. Keep it pressed * Insert the USB A cable into the Maxi on the BACKSIDE (next to HDMI) * Start the Zadig software you downloaded and have it install the driver for the new unknown device. CAN TAKE SEVERAL MINUTES, be patient * Start the "boot.cmd" inside the Windows folder of the FEL Rescue boot software and WAIT * After a while you will see two additional drives on your PC with unknown filesystems. One is ~16 MB large, the other should be at around 180 MByte but that can vary based on how you mangled the ROM. * Get the drive letter of the larger drive. * Start Win32Imager and write the Nandb file straight to that larger drive (BE CAREFUL not to overwrite any real drive on your PC) * Once this is done, "eject" the extra hardware on the USB port via the Windows taskbar command for ejecting stuff. (Not really necessary, you can simply unplug the Maxi). That's it. Your Maxi should now boot with original 1.30 firmware again. If you also messed with Nanda (most likely you did not), you need to image the smaller drive with the nanda file. THANK YOU, jj0 and spannernick - nothing in this here is new, I just wanted to collate the info. All the details are in the forum, if you need more background, please check the respective threads. If it isn't adequately powered reading/writing nandb might not be dependable.

I recommend a Verify after the Write.

Nice! Just a very minor detail: You should state in the step-by-step at what point it's ok to let go of the button.

Do you hold the button down until it recognizes the system? Im having no luck with this method.

No, you hold the FEL button down, plug in the USB cable into the Mini, if it does not turn on right away press the power button and release the FEL button a second or so later. It just needs to be pressed while the Maxi powers up.

One way of finding out THEC64 Maxi is in FEL Mode is right click on Start and click on Device Manager and then on THEC64 Maxi hold down FEL button then plug USB A Cable in and your will see Device Manager flicker and a new device appear, now let go of FEL Button and now THEC64 Maxi is in FEL Mode.. A new device unknown appears on the PC when you put THEC64 Maxi into FEL-Mode.

I think I am doing something wrong because I am following the instructions and not even the startup screen appears. Before the repair, at least the black screen was 😁😁😁
1. I hold the black FEL button and plug the USB cable into the port on PC and MAXI. 2. I run the ZADIG program and install the drivers. 3. After the correct installation, I click BOOT in the WINDOWS folder and wait for everything to finish on a black screen. 4. After this operation, two new disks E (16mb) and F (183mb) appear. WINDOWS is asking me to format these disks, so I click FORMAT. 5. After formatting, I run WINDOWS32 IMAGER and save the NANDA-MAXI file on the F drive (183mb) 6. After the whole operation, I connect the MAXI to the monitor, turn it on and, apart from the red light, nothing happens to MAXI.

After the whole operation, I connect the MAXI to the monitor, turn it on and, apart from the red light, nothing happens to MAXI. Yes you are doing it wrong. You should not have formatted the drives, Windows just asks for that because it doesn't understand those drives. So now you have re-bricked your Maxi.To fix it you should restore a nanda image to the 16MB drive. You have already restored the nandb image to the 183MB drive do that should be OK.

NANDA - MAXI NANDA C64 RESCUE V12 You need to write: - nanda to the smaller drive - nandb to the bigger drive And use the nanda and nadb that belong together - either from a backup if you made a backup or from spannernick 's selection of backups.

I've got everything from SPANNERNICK. I downloaded the folders and there is NANDA-MAXI in one and NANDA THEC64 RESCUE V12 in the other. I understand that NANDA-MAXI saves on this smaller disk and NANDA THE C64 RESCUE V12 on a larger one ??

As I said above: - nanda to the smaller drive - so this would be NANDA-MAXI - nandb to the larger drive - so this would be NANDB-MAXI I don't know where you got the 'NANDA THE C64 RESCUE V12' from I don't see it on spannernick's drive?

*** Additions from other threads and my experience.
You need:
* A Windows PC (Linux will also work but these instructions are for the lowest common denominator)
* A USB A to USB A type cable that you can plug into a USB port on your PC AND on your C 64. You most likely do not have this and will have to buy one.
* A copy of "NandB" - at the time of writing provided by Nick here in the folders named "Nand Backup"... onedrive.live.com/?authkey=%21ABhy1XUuzXpmo74&id=DE6843E1C82A96C8%2138859&cid=DE6843E1C82A96C8
* The FEL Rescue boot software - at the time of writing provided by jj0 here: onedrive.live.com/?authkey=%21AP7Wb4Ye4W%2D1mOw&cid=E74A8F604C4D006C&id=E74A8F604C4D006C%218312&parId=E74A8F604C4D006C%218300&action=locate
* USB Drivers from here: zadig.akeo.ie/
* A Windows Disk Imager, the one here is confirmed as working: sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/
So this is the shortened step by step:
* Remove all cable from the Maxi. ***(USB Power, HDMI, Joystick) * Take a screwdriver, take out the three screws at the bottom of the C64.
*** Start Device Manager on windows PC
* Plug the USB A cable into your PC
* Press the "FEL mode" button on the board of the C64 Maxi, it is a very small button directly under the empty white socket on your left. Keep it pressed
***Insert the USB Micro Power lead (more robust power supply during flashing)
* Insert the USB A cable into the Maxi on the BACKSIDE (next to HDMI)
***Check for a new unknown device in device manager
*** If no unknown device Press TheVic20 Power button and check again - N.B. The red power LED will not come on
* Start the Zadig software you downloaded and have it install the driver for the new unknown device. CAN TAKE SEVERAL MINUTES, be patient
* Start the "boot.cmd" inside the Windows folder of the FEL Rescue boot software and WAIT
* After a while you will see two additional drives on your PC with unknown filesystems. One is ~16 MB large, the other should be at around 180 MByte but that can vary based on how you mangled the ROM.
*** Start Disk Manager on windows and you will see 2 new drives mine were E: (16MB) and F: (~128MB)
* Get the drive letter of the larger drive.
* Start Win32Imager and write the Nandb file straight to that larger drive (BE CAREFUL not to overwrite any real drive on your PC)
* Once this is done, "eject" the extra hardware on the USB port via the Windows taskbar command for ejecting stuff. (Not really necessary, you can simply unplug the Maxi).
That's it. Your Maxi should now boot with original 1.30 firmware again. If you also messed with Nanda (most likely you did not), you need to image the smaller drive with the nanda file.
Note the Red power LED light not illuminating in FEL mode confused me.
Finally - as for leads I used one of those old external hard drive / CD ROM USB A to 2x USB A leads that had extra power needs. I just used the data to data part and not the extra 5V support lead.
