@span Ok so I have some results and I think I know where the problem may be (comic relief, You know I'm something of a scientist myself - Spiderman) lol The short version, both image (fix) and latest version PCUAE-1.7.5b9 didnt work. Same issue, black screen of death. I used two different usb sticks, and both had the same issue. So we can rule out the theory of the USB drive being the issue or the format utility (yes I used that guiformater so we can rule that out as well) Using a new usb stick, PCUAE-1.7.5b9, black screen and that same old file in the log folder. I looked at the Games folder and only found the switch.sh script. Didnt see any other files. Dont know if this is by design, just sharing what I saw. When I compared it to my working USB (that's on 1.7.4b5) I saw other files (scripts) that the new versions didnt have. The experiment: Using the .img file, setup a 4GB USB stick I had. Put the image on, copied some games on via the Manager and it booted to the stock/factory carousel (not the PCUAE). Tried switch the carousel CTRL+F3, loaded the 4ALL v1.3.2 carousel and it showed the original graphics from the stock/factory game list. That told me (showed) it loading but not reading the games and files from the favorite folder. Renamed the Games folder and copied over the working copy of my games folder (from the 1.7.4b5 usb stick) and it did the same thing. Did a CTRL SHIFT F7 to load up my one of my favorites lists and as it was trying to load, black screen of death! Tried the same with the new USB stick PCUAE-1.7.5b9 and got the usual black screen of death as well. My thoughts and observations: To me it seems that the latest version(s) are trying to load the Favorites 1 and some script is no seeing/loading that specific favorites list. I had tried loading only one of those favorites and got the same result. From what I am seeing and tried so far thats what it looks like at least. Its hanging trying to find the path or files it needs to load that carousel up. If it helps, maybe we can help beta test the new releases before making them public? I feel your frustration and it sucks. I did something like this years ago and something that worked on my end but broke on the end user's side drove me nuts. At any rate, always glad to assist in any capacity I can and we are all grateful and thankful for all that you are doing. @mrgreen36 - Nice utility but I don't think its a formatting or USB issue in this case Thanks again guys and as always, anything I can do to assist please let me know

Does the USB Stick light flash when its trying to load PCUAE...?
Can you share PCUAE v1.7.4.b5 please the one that works for you, I do not have a copy of it, I want to see the different and might be able to build on top of it and add bits to it, and get it to work for you...?
I think I found it does the file have the date 29/12/21 on it...?

I think I might know why this works and the latest one does not with some, I removed the languages from it, so I have to try and add it back, it messed it up somewhere maybe, thats the only difference I can see that I removed. But this do not mean I be adding new languages to PCUAE, its to hard to do that cause you have to have 2 sets of the scripts so the more you add the more copies of the same script you have but in a different language, so if I change something in PCUAE then it needs changing in the Languages too, I started to find it too hard to do, theirs only so much one person can do..

Mine are all PAL(EU), can you put it on your Signature please, its now part of the rules of the forum that you have to add it there, it so I do not need to keep asking for it, and if you have a problem with you do not have to keep typing wat model you have, I have mine on my signature too... as a example below, just add it like that, if you do not know how to add it, I can help you...?

Hi, what does the language do in script? And what was the error in firmware boot? I test my SD card now, hope it works! The PCUAE Option Menu, Carousel Changer, Mode Changer and The Help Menu can be shown in a different language even the Info Game Slots can be changed too, it has Dutch and Turkish included with PCUAE, well it will now.. . I removed it from PCUAEv1.7.4/5

ok i think its not an device issue, now with new usb reader and sd card + PCUAE-1.7.5b9 i can apply the fake firmware and the PCUAE starts and end after "log-2-pcuae-modes-and-splash-screen-time-ok". For my part i am at the same point with PCUAE-1.7.5b4 or b5. I test later - after work - some button/keyboard inputs to check if the pcuae menu comes up. *am i too stupid or too old for that S**t? It has to work out now!

Here we go again :-)
I make all from the walkthrough. At the Point "...PCUAE will start and you will see a black screen for about 10 seconds then you should see two splash screens, RGL for 7 seconds and then PCUAE splash screen for 7 seconds then a black screen again for 10 seconds..." my version is going another way.
4 seconds after the pcuae splash theC64 boot up new. No joystick or keyboard input work to get the option menu (Ctrl+f7). Boot up in firmware mode but have some games (0-A) installed in carousel folder named 'favorites'. I think the name is not necessary. I firmware mode the joystick input (menu+right fire) does not work. Push menu, set the yellow cursor to one game and fire start it :-(
What do now? I hope the new version with restored language is working.

I did some testing with the latest PCUAE 1.7.5b9 and get the same issues that is reported here, just a black screen, no logos popping up. I did some trial and error, comparing 1.7.4b5 (which works) with the latest one. I discovered that it's the gadget mode changes done after 1.7.4b5 that makes something hang in the beginning of the start.sh file, I get to line 75.
I tried to replace the content of Carousel_Games\Options\Gadget_Mode\ in the latest version with the one from 1.7.4b5, then it boots up and works. So there is something there that causes the problems.

I found a workaround to get the latest release (1.7.5b9) to work: Go into the folder Carousel_Games\Options\Gadget_Mode on your USB stick and remove the file "gadget_mode_enabled". After that it boots up for me properly.

I found out why some users where getting a black screen and PCUAE was not booting...
1. Gadget Mode was running USB Mode and waiting for you to eject USE stick to do a restart. 2. I put in the scripts from the start of PCUAE `>/dev/ttyS0` at the end of each line that was stopping it running if you never had a UART connected, it took me all day yesterday to removed them all, It did it to me when I disconnected it, so on every script I had to remove it, its now booting up without the UART connected and working like normal, do not know why it started to do this now they have been there from the beginning, maybe the 1.6.1 update or before it changed something in the OS, I never noticed it cause I always have my USB2Serial connect to the machines UART(THEC64 Mini and THEVIC 20) all the time.
I will be releasing a update today and PCUAE should now work for users with the PCUAE black screen bug.

That sounds good because removing the file "gadget_mode_enabled" didn't help me.

Yeah.. it does stop the USB Mode problem but not the `>/dev/ttyS0` in the start.sh file, out of interest, try the new start.sh file, it might do something so it might partly work but it might need the other scripts to but you can try it if you like, just replace it with the old start.sh on the root of the USB stick, it should now try and boot it, maybe. start.sh (41.25 KB)

not working for me, i reinstall the stick now
Edit: New installation and no changes. I delete the "gadget_mode_enabled" and replace the start.sh. Have setup "english" as language but not working. Fake Firmware apply and pcuae splash ok, then after 3-4 seconds reboot. Ctrl+F7, F1, F3, F5 nothing.
I will zip my stick and post it here, please test someone.

I have no games installed but i can't get the help or option menu. Edit: here my zip of the stick, can one compare?: download removed

I have a feeling you did this already but just in case, make sure you start with formatting the USB drive first. I noticed when I upgraded from a previous release it gave me issues. If I have time later I may try formatting my drive and try it again.
Edit: the log files are a good sign, now we just need to find out what is breaking it.

So, one last test with 1x 2GB stick, 1x 4GB stick and 1x reader with 32GB SD card. All formatet with rufus tool. All three show the same behavior. Logs end at "log-2h-pcuae-mode-enabled-no-fw-starting-up-enable-screens-ok".
The 2GB stick has a flashlight, this flashes immediately after the pcuae splash disappears, then the c64 restarts immediately. It's 3-4 seconds. Didn't have any games installed. However, the inputs with the keyboard do not work.
Is that the same with you?

Dont use rufus, use some other utility like the one in this thread or SD formarter ( LINK HERE). Then from the PCUAE manager install PCUAE to USB. The last step should be to copy the start.sh script (posted a few posts back) onto your USB stick. Should work like a charm. Worse case, you can always roll it back to an older version Hope that helps. Cheers

You don't delete the file 'gadget_mode_enabled'?

Now, i try the sd formatter tool, but this is not an other result at the end. I have the boot issue after splash screen.
Then i go to github and download the 1.7.4b5 - i do nothing else as with 1.7.5b9 but don't remove gadget (if this is present) or replace the start.sh With 1.7.4b5 i got this what is named 'black screen of death' here - no reboot, firmware carousel starts again.
OK my TheC64 is not the problem i think, i will check this now once more with replaced start.sh...

With 1.7.4b5 in pcuae mode i get the options menu with Ctrl+F7. Now i have activated the autoboot mode first time - this worked. But Ctrl+F3 not show an carousel. 1.7.5b9 still does not work for me.
I will check my devices log folders now if i see something.

Mmmh, logs from 1.7.4b5 stop at 'log-2b-pcuae-mode-starting-up-enable-screens-ok' and the games folder has no carousel-gamelist-loader.sh With the new 1.7.6b1 i get nothing, only black screen on boot, no splash, no fallback to firmware mode and no keybord input helps. I give up, the logs in attachment... Attachments:
