Hello all. Formatted a usb drive today and noticed there was a new version, v1.7.5.b4. Went thru the normal process, installed it and I'm just getting a blank screen at boot. For sanity purposes, I tried PCUAE v1.7.4.b5 using the new release of Manager, same issue. Boots up to a black screen.
Reformatted my USB stick, installed PCUAE v1.7.4.b5 manually and manually copied the games folder from another USB stick. This worked
Repeated the above and used PCUAE v1.7.5.b4 and got a black screen at boot.
Unless I am missing some step here, cant seem to get the new releases to work.
Thanks

Do you see the PCUAE Manager asking for administrator when you start the PCUAE Setup, I having a problem with it on my setups, not a problem with PCUAE Manager, it might be that its not copying over the files properly and replacing them, make sure that PCUAE Manager is running as Administrator, Right Click on PCUAE Manager Icon and click on Run as Administrator, I just did and installed PCUAE v1.7.4.b5 to a SD Card and put in into my THEC64 Mini and it works fine and loaded into the carousel on first boot, it works on my THEVIC 20 too.

Thanks. Have UAC disabled and I'm sure I tried running as admin. I did notice the recent version was a bit smaller than the last one. I'll double check and report back.

Update: Didn't have a lapse of memory, ran it again with admin rights, same issue as I mentioned above. At first glance, noticed that the new build was missing the carousel-gamelist-loader.sh script. Copied the GAME folder manually to the newly created USB stick. Same issue. NOTE: Ran the PCUAE manager as admin and the installer (PCUAE v1.7.5.b4).

It copies carousel-gamelist-loader.sh from carousel-gamelist-loader folder in options to game folder, what machine are you using...?
Try this... Start the Machine and load up PCUAE, wait 14 second after the PCUAE splash screen, if no carousel press CTRL+F3 and the Carousel Changer should load, pick a carousel to load say TheCarousel 4All v1.3.2 and see if it loads, if it does, its having a problem finding the first carousel to load, it should now load TheCarousel 4All v1.3.2 everytime you start PCUAE now until you change it.

I'm using the MAXI. Unresponsive with CTRL+F3 and I never even get to the splash screen. Just a black screen when it boots up. I even tried removing the USB stick, letting it load up with the stock firmware, then loaded the fake firmware. Reboots and back to a black screen it goes. No splash screen, nothing. For kicks, I went back to the older PCUAE versions and those worked without any issue. Everything started going sideways as soon as I upgraded to PCUAE v1.7.5.b4 & PCUAE Manager 2.2.1 As my last test, reboot my PC and reverted back to PCUAE v1.7.4.b5 and from PCUAE Manager 2.2.1 added some roms and it loaded up with no issues. Tested PCUAE v1.7.5.b4 and got the same problem again. So I am suspecting it has something to do with the v1.7.5.b4 build and the MAXI? Below is quick file size comparison, version and my results: v1.7.5.b4 - 278 MB (will not boot on MAXI) v1.7.4.b5 - 296 MB (worked on the MAXI) v1.7.4.b2 - 297 MB (worked on the MAXI) Maybe some files critical to the MAXI arent there? Just spitballing here as I'm all out of things to test. Thanks again

i have the maxi and works fine with me and what happens if you do an upgrade ? and what are the logs say can you put it in here ?
I'm at a total loss then. Log files generate a 0 KB file. If I try to run the fake firmware, I get a blank (black) screen. Note that my maxi is on the latest stock firmware.

Hi all. I've only been testing out PCUAE for a few days since Christmas but loving it so far. The version that shows as 1.7.3 'Updated 24/11/21' in the start.sh file on the USB works perfectly for me with PCUAE 2.2.1 however, I cannot get the later versions to work on any USB stick. I just get the black screen issue. I am also on a MAX with the latest firmware.

It does not matter how big the log files are, I need to know there names so I can see how far it booted to, even if its not showing on the screen, when its get to a certain point in the script it makes a file at that point to tell me where it got to ...? If you do not want to copy there names just take a picture of the folder... like...

TheC64 Maxi sometimes does not load the carousel cause of power, It has done it to my THEVIC 20 and PCUAE, and if you use a USB 4 Port Hub like I do, I never had that problem with THEC64 Mini, it loads up everytime, even with using the same hub, probably cause it uses more power.

In my case, I am not using a usb hub and I have more than adequate power going to the device (using a 5V 2A power supply as opposed to the standard 5V 1A that came with it). If it was an undervolt condition, then I would expect it to happen consistantly regardless of which PCU version I am using. This does not seem to be the case with me.

The good news or at least workaround would be to keep the PCUAE on an previous release i.e. v1.7.4.b5 or lower if the latest version bombs out. Good thing it keeps the installers in the pcuae-install folder
Now I'm going back to hunting down some .d81 images

Can you shear the start.sh file from the root of the usb stick, you can add it as a attachment, if you go down to the Quick Reply Box and press Reply button you will see it, the button is on the top right of the Reply Box.

I think I might know why, one of the scripts were broken at start up and I just fixed it, so try the new version in PCUAE manager now but keep a copy of the one that works first, this version is called PCUAE 1.7.5b6.

Just tested 1.7.5b6 on a freshly formatted USB and got the same result. Log folder shows only the log-0-initializing-screen-ok file Also attaching the start.sh script if you need to look at it

I don't know about you guys, but I am starting to feel like "that guy" and feeling bad for spannernick trying to crank out these installers Formatted this USB stick I have several times, tried the latest release 1.7.5b7 and I got exactly the same thing! Even tried different tools to format the drive, from the classic HPUSB format tool, sd card formater, just not booting up. Log still shows that single file log-0-initializing-screen-ok
Tried installing the PCUAE incrementally, got the same results. Seems like the only version that works for me is 1.7.4b5. Anything after that wont boot and gives me that single log file.
Stupid question, does the Manager cache any files that get copied over other than GAMES folder that might be screwing things up?
@ spannernick - in the latest release you had a 7z file of xx.5b6 in the root folder, not that its a big deal, just made the last installer a bit bigger in size when you created the selfextrating exe. Anything else I can help with, just let me know Thanks again, appreciate the help and all that you guys are doing.

Hi @all and a happy new year,
i am new here and new in the world of theC64 (it was an christmas present). I find this community and the great pcuae tool - thanks for that.
I have the same problem you discussed here. I see only the pcuae splash screen and then the screen goes black, theC64 boot up new and the standard firmware was loading again.
I have installed the "pcuae manager 2.2.2" on pc, the latest "PCUAE-1.7.5b6-setup" on stick and the "Carousel-setup" gamepack too. Changes nothing.
My logs folder shows the files "log-0-initialising-screen-ok" to "log-2-pcuae-modes-and-splash-screen-time-ok"

Oh I accidentally left that in it, its the same setup but made with 7zip, I wanted to see if it was Winrar giving problems so I zipped it all up with 7zip as a test and it worked still for me, you can try installing it to a USB stick if you like. I am trying to get PCUAE to send info to a text file too but on luck so far, its so I can see what yours is doing. All I can say is maybe try another USB stick until PCUAE works with it or even a SD card, thats what I use and it boots everytime, When you change USB sticks your changing the USB device so they can be different, when you use a SD Card your using the same device cause you do not change the SD Card Reader, I am using the same reader, its a ANKER SD Card Reader, that I got in 2018 for my THEC64 Mini, its worked with every version of PCUAE. Try to boot it without the games in `USB://Carousel_Games/Games` folder and see if it boots into Firmware Mode, if it dose then there something wrong with PCUAE Mode maybe but not sure cause it works fine on my THEC64 Mini and THEVIC 20 so the only other thing it can be now is the device your using the USB stick. I hopefully sort that out on my next post...

Hold On... Have a idea... What I am going to do is shear a file called ` PCUAE-FIX-1.7.5b7.img` and you use Win32 Disk Imager to copy it to a USB Stick, like you do with `RPI OS.img` files for the `Raspberry PI`, and hopefully will sort your problem out, its is a copy of my USB stick that works but its only 2 GB in size, I am sure there be away of extending the file system so it uses all of USB Stick space, you copy it to. I have done this before and it has worked, I am using the same USB stick I used before to do this, its a Integral 2 GB USB Stick, its quite old, maybe 10 years, before we started getting bigger USB Sticks, but it has always worked with PCUAE. I put the ` PCUAE-FIX-1.7.5b7.img` in a setup file called ` PCUAE-FIX-1.7.5b7-setup.exe` so just read the instructions and you can not go wrong, I hope.. Info... Hi, i make two new sticks. The PCUAE Manager loads a new version PCUAE-1.7.5b7-setup. First USB not with the PCUAE Manager, manually install the "PCUAE-1.7.5b7-setup" and then the "Carousel-setup". Second with the PCUAE Manager but without games. Both with admin rights, i test it now before i check your image file. Edit: a few minutes later - nothing, both USB not working. I selected the systeminformation and apply to the firmware-fake-update. The window closed and shows the systemmenu once again. I order now an usb reader with sd card

Update: one more try and it failed again I loaded your pcuae-fix.img and make the new stick - yes i read the manual. TheC64 boot up the firmware 1.6.1 if the stick is in before power on. Then the same as i wrote in the last post. I select the systeminfo, the fake firmware "theC64-9_9_90" was found, i select apply and the systeminfo window closed. But now i have an idea, i setup german as language - is this an problem? I test it... (EDIT: no, no language issue) With PCUAE-1.7.5b4-setup i can boot but then a black screen and back to firmware mode (see first post in this thread), with the last two updates nothing works for me. I think not the USB devices are the problem, i think its the machine version and firmware. My is in my signature.
