Hi there,
tried installing PCUAE 1.6.0 on 3 different USB sticks, with no good result.
With 2 of them i get a black screen after the Project Carousel USB logo, the last of them wasnt even recognized by the C64 maxi.
Any hints what i can do? Get another USB stick? Am i doing something wrong?
Greetings -AnalogHero

It's probably not this but start with the simple first step. Are you using a USB stick known to work with the mini or maxi? Next I'd download it again to make sure your copy isn't corrupt. If updating from the last version did you turn off the autoboot into classic mode before installing it? Cuz I think you're supposed to do that too.

Thanks for the reply.
The USB sticks worked with the maxi (and still do). Can load d64 or crt images from them. I also downloaded several version of pcuae, this should rule the broken download out. Also i did not updste from a previous verion, and formatted the usbsticks between the tries.

Maybe try installing the lastest version of the official firmware, and then reboot with and try to install the latest Project Carousel after that?
Beyond that maybe your screen is going blank because the system software is set to an incompatible video format such as pal or NTSC that your tv or monitor can't handle? I thought too I remember reading of somebody having their screen go blank and it required rebooting the tv and/or mini or maxi without the HDMI plugged in to reset something, and then booting again after plugging it back in. Come to think of it I think that was due to the software not switching between pal or NTSC speeds and games not working properly despite the menu showing it was.
If all that stuff checks out then obviously you're down to something odd happening with the latest project carousel others aren't running into.

Have bought a new a new USB stick today bit still no luck. Have tried everything i can think of.
Here is what i did: 1. Updated the 64 to the latest firmware. 2. Formatted the usb Stick to fat32. It will be recognized by the 64. 3. Installed pcuae 1.6.0 on the drive 4. Launched the fake update on the c64. 5. Original logo with sound is displayed, after that the usb logo. 6. After waiting for 2 minutes you hear the original bootsound but no picture. 7. The original carousel is displayed without any changes.

Soo... after fiddling around with this for almost 2 days i got it working. Dont know what fixed it in the end. New USBStick/Formatting with Rufus/Factory Reset/Selecting 60hz... it works now.
Thank you guys for helping me. - AnalogHero

Games do not come with PCUAE Standalone or All In One so it will boot into Firmware Mode, the Firmware Carousel so it will look like it has done nothing, you need to install The Games Pack so PCUAE Mode boots up. Easy Walkthrough for PCUAE... thec64community.online/post/9506

True. That confused me. But the first tries with the 3 USB sticks a had lying around it stuck at a black screen after the blue pcuae logo. Maybe it was bad luck.
The one it worked with was the new one. Its a Sandisk cruzer 16 gb.
Anyway thanks for you help. And thanks for this awesome piece of software.

Sorry it took for me so long to reply, been working on PCUAE 1.7.1... Its sounds like it had a problem booting the mode, after its shows the Splash Screens it should load into a mode, I have to look into it, it did it to me once and I fixed it, it should of booted into Firmware Mode if no games in Carousel_Games/Games folder or if you did add the games pack then PCUAE Mode should of booted. What version did you install...? PCUAE Standalone or PCUAE All in One..? I do not use a USB Stick, I use a SD Card with a SD Card Reader its a 3 port hub with two SD card slots, one normal sized that works in THEVIC20 and the other one thats a micro SD card slot that dose not work with it so have to use a SD card adapter too and never had a problem with it, I have used Sandisk and Kington SD cards and they all work fine, the one I am using at the moment is a 16GB Kington Micro SD card. I do have USB Sticks and they work but they are old and do not have a lot of space on them so that why I used a SD card cause that what I had at the time and thought I would try it to see if it would work and it does... and some SD cards are cheaper than USB Sticks. If you look in the USB Stick root does it have a folder in it called logs, in there are flag files that tell me where PCUAE loaded up to when it stopped and just shows a black screen, if there is not a logs folder then I have not put it in that version, I have put it PCUAE 1.7.1...?

I tried installing both the standalone and the all in one 1.6.0. Also the 1.5.1 and the 1.4.3. so i dont think any of the downloads were broken. I really think the first USB stick i tried produced a black screen with all versions. I will check if there are log files on there, if i formatted it again i will put 1.6.0 on again and see if it makes a log file.

Almost forgot to report back. One USB stick that failed has 2 log files. (I formatted the other one)
log-1-initialising-screen-ok and log-1-pcuae-mode-ab-not-on-ok
Dont know if you can do something with this information.

`ab-not-on` tells me that Autoboot Mode is not enabled so its had to do a force boot, it does that too if it can not make the mode flag file to tell PCUAE what mode its on.

I think why some USB Sticks have a problem with PCUAE is cause it needs to be able to read and write to the USB stick and some USB stick do not like it. How PCUAE switches modes is it makes a file for the mode like `boot_vice enabled` and makes it boot into vice from start up, if it can't make the file then it has a problem switching but then it should just load up the carousel, I think we need a `PCUAE USB Stick Compatibility List` on which USB sticks work and which ones don't.
We could do it on Google Docs but I do not know how, never made a list on there before, that way you can add your own USB stick to the list..?
It can be as well that the USB Stick does not work with the carousel too so can't see it come up on the screen, the USB icon, I have seen it where a USB stick works in the File Loader fine but the carousel can not see the update file that on the same USB stick.
