Hello just got my C64 mini and everything’s ok. Upgraded to latest firmware, all good.
Just a curiosity: sometimes (not for any media loaded) it goes blank (black screen) for about 1 second and then everything restarts smoothly. Typically this happens during game loading or during game presentation screen. Never happened during gameplay. Tried to change the hdmi cable but no changes. Not a big deal, just wondering if it is just me or not.

Do you mean the Commodore Blue screen while loading or is it the C64Mini dropping HDMI and screen going black?
If it is the latter it might be the power supply - do you have a higher current capable power supply e.g. USB 3A phone charger?

It really seems that it’s dropping hdmi because also the background audio “buzz” stops.
The power supply I’m using says: OUTPUT: DC 5.0V/3.0A/15.0W, 9.0V/2.0A/18.0W, 12.0V/1.5A/18.0A
Many thanks for your reply

What are you loading when it does it? I will try to replicate.

I.e. Arcadia64, Jupiter Lander. But it’s not happening any time... say once every 4-5 loadings... it takes some patience. I’m also using a SNES usb gamepad, maybe it’s dragging more power than the original?

Try with the regular joystick and see if it still happens.
I see an occasional glitch on PCUAE with Carousel starting then flashing and restarting.

I would also try with a different powersupply. Just in case. Your PSU seems to be one that 'negotiates' with the device, I'm not sure how THE64 deals with that.

Thank you all guys. Changed the TV hdmi port, changed the power supply and changed the USB stick (I was using quite an aged one, now I got a newer stick still USB 2.0 but with double data transfer speed… who knows). So far so good, although had little time yesterday to test. Will update on the next few days. Thanks!

Also got the same problem just got the mini C64, seems to happen at random in the menus or in game. I'm using a normal power supply and I tested in on 2 diffrent monitors with the same results. Other times it doesnt happen. Probably faulty then?

So a little update, I took the thing appart yesterday to see if I could find anything wrong. I didn't, I turned it on, CPU got just around 40 degrees I figured by touching the heat sink so nothing wrong there, I noticed that the screen didn't go black once. That's weird I thought and put it back together, now I read but forgot which post it was that sometimes the power led legs are touching the circuit which could explain the weird behaviour. Since this doesn't seem to happen with the C64 maxi is plausible (more space between the led legs and circuit). After putting it back together and testing it for 2 hours doing various things on various screens I had one black screen, which is an improvement, with the new knowledge I took it appart again and bent the power led legs even though they seemed to just not touch the circuit.
Update: Now after a while the screen still goes black and back on I noticed, so maybe the circuit already shorted too much or something else is going on. Hopefully this information gives some more insight of the problem.

I've been having the same problem after owning a C64 mini for a couple of years. Can confirm that this does not ever happen with the maxi, so it must be isolated to the mini for some reason. It only happens during games, not at any particular time.

If nothing on the PC board is getting hot and the power supply is adequate then it's probably some kind of software glitch is my best guess.

I wondered as well if it was the power supply, or the display I was using. I will have to try using it on a different display for a while, and see if it reoccurs. There are not many threads discussing this bug, and I was under the impression that perhaps only I was experiencing it.

UPDATE
I recently acquired another C64 mini. This is an NTSC 60Hz model. I have been playing it for the last two weeks and have not had any black screen issues so far. Looks like I will be dismantling the other mini to see if there is anything I can do about it as mentioned above.
Important to mention is that for both MINIs and even my full size C64, I have been using the exact same HDMI and power cable that came with the original MINI that blacks out. Since only the original MINI blacks out with these cables, plugged into the same TV, I have ruled out the cables. This MINI also exhibits this same behaviour when plugged into my computer monitor.

I think the Maxi requires a higher amp rated power supply than the one the mini comes with? If so you might want to use something else on the Maxi to avoid any issues.
