It seems there are still many controllers or even atari plug style to usb adapters that the mini and maxi won't work with. I know you can manually edit the config file for this but I really wish somebody would write something like a windows program that will evaluate the controller or adapter you plug in and then it will ask you what buttons you want assigned to what and then it would automatically edit the configuration file on your mini or maxi usb. It seems the controllers I really want to use, such as the Hyperlink Atari 2600 style usb joystick with 2 fire buttons and 4 navigation buttons, wont work with the mini or maxi.

That would be interesting, but it would have to run on Linux not Windows because the USB HID version of the joystick seems to be reported differently between the two OS's. And the USB HID version is part of the controller identifier used. But until someone writes such a program you will have to do it manually. It's not that difficult, and you have to do it only once for each controller you want to use.

The user jj0 (who replied to you above) devised a way to start "full blown" Vice ( the emulator for the C64) from USB stick ( link). You can define joystick keys in the way that you described in "full blown" Vice (actually SDL-Vice). SDL-Vice's menu is very cryptic so it may take some experimenting, but it works for me. There must even be a way to let your 'The C64' automatically start Vice (just like PCUAE, project Carousel USB anniversary edition) if there's a USB stick with Vice in The C64. But that's another story. P.S. If you appreciate the Carousel mode of The C64 (I hate it with a passion) then this is not the way to go for you...

The next version of PCUAE will solve for most types of user. It has the ability to boot to any of the 7 supported Vice machines (Pet, Vic20, C64, Plus 4, C128, Super CPU C64 and C64DTV) without seeing Carousel or Retrogames logos. It also has the ability to manage a curated set of carousels that can display every game for C64 and Vic20, the complete Gamebase if desired and keep adding as new software appears.
