I love my C64 Maxi, but wondered if a 8580 SID could be enabled? There's nothing in the manual, but happy to start tinkering! Thanks.

You can do that in PCU already in the Carousel v1.3.2, run C64 in Classic Mode or load a crt that uses 8580 and use CTRL-S to SID Swap (6581/8580) then soft reset the emulator with CTRL-R and the SID is swapped..

Currently you don't need even to perform soft reset after SID's swap - it will be applied right after swapping it. There is only a known, old issue that when you will have SID 8580 applied, then after launching any game again from carousel sound may be heavily distorted. So you will need to swap it to 6581 and to 8580 again to "repair" it.

What crt games use the 8580?

Yars Revenge is in PCU(Prouect Carousel USB), its in H to R screen on the Carousel, you run the game them press CTRL-S to change to Sid 8580 then soft reset the C64 by pressing CTRL-R(you can only do this with a .crt Cartridge game, Yars Revenge is a Cartridge game) then you will hear the title music change and sounding the way it meant to sound... You can do it with a D64 or Tap image files too, you need to activate SID 8580 first then soft reset THEC64, then load the game from .D64 or .Tap that uses that SID.
