Hi everyone,
I'm entirely new here and new to the C64. Many, many years ago I programmed in 6510 on the original, and had a couple of games on Magazine Disks.
I've just had the 'maxi' for my birthday, and ordered a Speedlink Competition Pro at the same time.
I cannot get anything out of the Speedlink. Firmware is 1.3.x. Is it supposed to be as simple as plug and play on the carousel? First stop was Pitstop II to show the kids, the Comp Pro doesn't work at all, neither in the game nor the carousel.
First thoughts to be honest were around the C64. Now I've brought the comp pro up to my PC and plugged in. No 'installing USB device' messages at all, cannot see anything obvious and new in Device Manager (win 10).
Does anyone know if it should install drivers on the PC? What should it show up as on Device Manager? Have I missed a battery compartment or something! (I'm getting too old for this stuff). Any hints helpful, I need to know which element is not working, the stick or the C64.
Side questions
1. Do any of the 3 USB's on the side work for joysticks? Is there any #1 #2 assignment dependent on port? 2. I've some stuff of my own that miraculously still works on my original commodore from disk. How easy is it going to be to get that onto a PC and down to the C64? I'd like to archive my own material.
Thanks in advance

Hi,
Thanks for the question. I will ask tomorrow for you about the Speedlink Competition Pro joystick.
Regarding your other two questions:
1 - All USB ports should work with the joysticks, the assignment is done via "Commodore Joystick Map" or CJM files or file flags. As to what happens when you plug two joysticks in at once, I think that the one you use to load the game or program is set to the primary controller according to the CJM file for that game or program. By default, TheC64 assumes that joystick port 2 is the primary controller unless you tell it otherwise.
2 - I used to use GEOS and a program called geoBeap to archive my disk images, and transfer them to disk using a 1581 disk drive or FD2000 with geoDos, but this was in the days when GEOS was still supported and when floppy drives still existed on PCs. So yes it's possible. As to how you want to go about it is up to you, but there are options available. It's likely that you can use a SD Card reader on your Commodore with an IEC adaptor to transfer your files from 1541 to SD Card. But for any of this that I've mentioned, you will of course need a real Commodore C64 or C128.
Thanks,
Shaun.

You can test the Competition Pro on your PC via this page: gamepad-tester.com/If it doesn't show up there's something wrong with it (or less likely with the USB port). The joystick is plug and play and does not need batteries.

Hi Shaun, Thanks for your swift and informative reply, appreciated and very welcoming! I'm strongly suspecting the Joystick was dead on arrival and may just get on with the returns procedure. Everything I see (though mostly concerning the 'mini') seems to indicate it is supported from Firmware 1.2 onwards. Are the firmwares for the 2 versions of The 64 the same do you know. I'd still appreciate anything you find out. I'm lucky enough to have a working CBM64 and 1541, to my immense surprise the disks and tapes have not turned to dust in the loft either... I'll have a good look around lemon.com, I imagine pretty much every methodology is mentioned there somewhere or other. thanks again QuagSwag

I've tried 2 ports - both of which work with other devices, and I get nothing. Surprised to get a dead on arrival these days, but just unlucky I guess. Thank you very much for the help, really appreciated.

Hi quagswag,
Yes, update to the latest firmware always if you want to do anything other than play the games on the Carousel. And even if you do want to do just that you will occasionally get a free game with the firmware update anyway so it's worth doing on that level.
Regards,
Shaun.

Did you check the OS and its installed properly if it Windows 10, look in Device Manager when you have it connected to it to see if you can see it, if you remove it and plug it back in, if you see it flicker, it flickers when you add a device, you might be able to see it under USB devices or look where it adds the controllers under Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers, its better if look in Control Panel then Settings, Settings don't show everything and its harder to see what's wrong. It might be there but might needs drivers for it to work.

So a new joystick arrived this morning and I've just managed to test it. The good news, is that it works out the box this time. No issues. The previous joystick was indeed Dead on Arrival. Quite a surprise. Now I have a new problem I'm a leftie. Therefore I want to use my right thumb on the fire button while controlling the stick with my left. Imagine my horror, all the buttons have been assigned to different tasks. The only one that 'fires' is the one under the left thumb. Not great. So, I gather there is some form of mapping available for the joysticks when 'importing' games that will help. However, can you change mapping with the carousel? QuagSwag

QuagSwag It sounds like its in the gamecontrollerdb.txt file but the buttons are set wrong but you can only change that in the firmware, if you do it with the cjm tool you would have to do it with every game you want to play and it might not work if the buttons are set wrong, so maybe its would be better to use PCU(Project Carousel USB) and you can change the Competition Pro in the c64gamecontrollerdb.txt file, the file is in Carousel_Games/Options/controllers/c64gamecontrollerdb.txt. There is 2 entries for the Competition Pro in the db.txt file.. GUID number... 030000000b0400003365000000010000,Speed-Link Competition Pro,a:b1,b:b5,back:b3,lefttrigger:b0,leftx:a0,lefty:a1,righttrigger:b4,start:b2,x:b6,y:b7,platform:Linux, GUID Number... 03000000790000001c18000011010000,SPEEDLINK COMPETITION PRO Game Controller for Android,a:b0,back:b1,lefttrigger:b3,leftx:a0,lefty:a1,start:b4,platform:Linux, There is instructions in the PCU thread about how to add a controller/joystick, its in the Q & A sections.. thec64community.online/thread/501/project-carousel-usbThere is a gamepad-tool for Windows( generalarcade.com/gamepadtool/) and is included with PCU and its in the controllers folder in the gamepad-tool folder. if you run that with the comp Pro plugged in to your PC you should be able to see the GUID number of it, see if it matches one of them above, the number is at the start of the GUID.
