I'm hoping this is an easy question to answer - if so, then apologies in advance for my ignorance!
I'm currently using a couple of the USBmount carousel files. These work great for me because as soon as I un-power the Maxi, it loses all trace and returns to stock carousel.
However, I want to add some of my own ... I fully understand the principals involved in that files are created for covers, screens, .tsg meta and of course, the game itself, but this is where I get stuck.
I can't find any software that allows me to make a .gz file, and then add my file to it.
Can anyone help, guide, or point me in the right direction?

But even easier is to use the Carousel Tool (https://thec64community.online/thread/482/thec64-carousel-game-tool)
