I was trying to use .d81 files for multidisk games that were converted to single disk 1581 images. When using TheC64 Maxi Game Tool, I created a few test games on .d81 images, but it doesn't seem to load the games. Does the way vice is setup within TheC64 not allow for 1581 drive use which would make using d81 files impossible?
If anyone has any advice I'd appreciate hearing it.
Thanks.John

Thanks.John I do remember faintly (but do not have access to my Mini or other stuff until Monday) that renaming a .d81 to .d64 was a hack that under some circumstances allowed using those images, BUT I MIGHT BE WRONG HERE, this is something that came up one or two years ago and I don't know under what circumstances (might have been a different emulator!).

This issue appears resolved. As per your suggestion in the other thread about turning "True Drive Emulation" off in the config settings for the game. I had that set correctly, but when using TheC64 Maxi Game Tool on the PC and testing a game on it, it launches VICE, the config settings from the game within the carousel does not override the actual vice settings, thus true drive emulation was actually on still within Vice. Doh!

I haven't been able to quite get this working - have a note off to the dev.
In VICE, if I change the drive to a 1581, my .d81 works fine. But even with a VSF + .d81, renamed to .d64 ...? I get a disk error when the game restarts from the snapshot and makes its first disk call.

I've noticed something and this might be an issue or the way the carousel works. I can't seem to get games to save and have the saves stick after restarting and then relaunching the game from the carousel. Is game saving for games launched from the carousel non-functional?
Also, that working Where in the USA is Carmen Sandiego.crt inside the .vsf file loads fine on the actual flashed TheC64 Maxi, but after completing the first mission, the game just sits there when it says my success will be noted on my record, which I believe is when the game saves your progress. That could be further evidence that game saving is not supported when games are launched through the carousel. Still, the built in Temple of Apshai Trilogy seems to save just fine.
An update on d81 files. I managed to get them to work when testing on the PC through TheC64 Maxi Game Tool, but when flashed to the actual unit, when I click on the games that are in .d81 format (no .vsf file for the d81s) I simply get a black screen and nothing else. I'm going to try launching these games from the classic aka default loading from USB mode.
***UPDATE***
Tested the .d81 files when launched through the USB stick and NOT from the carousel. Save games work with the USB method, so if worse comes t oworse, I'll just load those games manually through the USB option and forget the carousel for such games. Not a big deal I guess.

When saving the snapshot of a disk, cartridge or cassette you need to tick on "save current attached disk image" or "save current loaded ROM image" otherwise the game can't load the next part from it,it only captures the state of the C64 at the time.

"save current attached disk image" or "save current loaded ROM image" Yep have been doing that. .crt and .d64 files will save inside the .vsf file, but .d81s won't Still the Easy Flash cart attached to the Carmen Sandiego.vsf file doesn't save after completing a mission. A few .vsf files I tried with .d64 files attached to them did not save any data even though they have high score savers. The game runs the drive after entering your initials as if it is saving the high score file, but when closing out and relaunching, the high score data is not updated, so the disk saving didn't stick. I'm wondering if within a .vsf file you can't save to the disk or crt image that is attached inside the .vsf file. I'm going to make a Temple of Apshai Trilogy.vsf and test it since TheC64 comes with that game and it does save your character data. I'll see if it will also work on a copy of the game I put together with my own .d64 of the game.

Your right the game will not load when flashed to the mini/maxi, but i have my carousel overmounted to usb. i tried it with this and it loads just fine.
