Ok so I just installed the project carousel stand alone anniversary addition on my mini and maxi and man gotta say this thing is awesome! Great job! I'm going to throw up a post in the games forum (or wherever it should go) in a day or two, short and sweet, as to the few simple steps to take for idiots like me who had to muddle through it. It really is simple. As a final tip to clear up any confusion (again for idiots like me) it appears you have to "update the firmware" at each boot up one time to load it, wait for the screen to go black and reboot, and then the carousel will have it on there. Then when at the carousel just hit menu and then left fire button at the same time to sift through the various compilations to load into the carousel. Wow this thing is awesome. Thx again for doing this. Now I've got more reading to do to discover more features but for most people that's all you need to know unless you want to dive into deeper features. If you don't mind, please don't do this post about instructions yet. It would be not so helpful if there are errors or omissions. Please don't take offence but you have only just figured it out. I am happy to take your observations via a PM. I am preparing a new guide based on the next version as requested by Nick. It will be a fresh pinned post separate to this thread. Thank you for understanding.

No problem. Just remember it's the simple little steps along with clarity of what program does what that some may assume are obvious that may stump others who aren't practiced in it.
Btw loving the vic 20 games! Always cool to see old hardware pushed to it's limits. I was hoping pitfall would be on there cuz it's a recent one for it using raster interupts to push the vic20 graphics, but I see it elsewhere on the forum somebody put together with others in a compilation.

This is absolutely fantastic but it seems to be missing the features from the last official firmware.
I just noticed that this is built on 1.3.2.
Any plans to upgrade?

Press CTRL-F5 and TheCarousel will change to v1.5.2(THEVIC20 version, but its the same just a different colour), to go back press CTRL-F3, it has the first version of TheCarousel too v1.0.5, press CTRL-F1, its before the File Loader was made, so does not have one and no VIC-20 support so only plays C64 games, it good for playing SID files.. , it was originally made for THEC64 Mini, I had to compile it from the source code.

When checking for updates to PCU Game Manager V1.6.0, it says there is a v1.7.3. As I download it, I get a windows error that it may not be safe. Can you confirm that it is safe? I took the risk and when I tried to install it, it says I need to install a Java Runtime Environment 14. That takes me to a Java site to download and install. It tells me to turn off my firewall before downloading and installing. One warning was a risk that I accepted, two has me a bit scared. Am I being overly cautious?

You don’t need to install a JRE, just replace the already existing .exe file in the pcu game manager directory. Close the game manager first. Then restart it and you have the new version.

I've changed some things on my The C64: I've installed the wonderful emulator from this community with the SDL menu and I edited my gamecontrollerdb.txt file so it has the proper settings for my joysticks. If I choose let my The C64 boot into PCUAE automatically if I have an USB stick in my The C64 and change that back, am I in trouble then?
Because for the "auto boot from USB" thing to work you guys obviously HAD to change some setting on the NAND file system to let The C64 boot into PCUAE.
P.S. Can I still boot into Linux (X Windows Mod, XWM) using PCUAE? [edit] apparently you can if you''ve got a copy of rootfs.img lying around somewhere.

Ok maybe it's because It's early and I'm still waking up, but can somebody just post the basics on installing project carousel? This thread is massive and reading the first page has my head spinning. Also, is the link on the first page updated to the most recent version? And, has anybody compiled a new download with something like the total gamebase library on it with box art or something? For my own reference, here's how I did it: - Download the file pcuae-1.4.3-standalone-setup.exe from here.
- Extract the contents from this self extracting archive.
- Copy to the root of a USB stick the following files/folders:
- Carousel_Games
- extragames
- start.sh
- thec64-backup.sh
- theC64-9_9_90.bin
- Do a firmware upgrade on The C64.
- Done.
This way the contents of your favorite USB stick are NOT wiped (formatted). Now I have to figure out how to access the Menu of the Vice emulator that you can start via PCUAE.

Vice's menu can be accessed by pressing the little round "Menu" button on the joystick that comes w/ The C64. Use the joysick to move around in the Menu (left exits a menu item). This is what Exploding Fist looks like in Vice. Vice boots up relatively okay, but some sort of Linux command line screen can be seen in the background. If you move the joystick then letters appear on the comand line. And when you start a game then half the screen's gone. It all looks promising but I hope that the developers can do something about the quirks/bugs.

Now you have done this you should see the Carousel with Favourites instead of the firmware carousel that shipped with the machine. Now press and hold menu button on the joystick and press the right fire button briefly. Here a ping then release menu button and you should see the PCUAE menu and Vice options.

Yes .. jj0 set up VICE to work on the machine, I think you can change it in the joystick map file for that emulator, its setup with THEC64 Joystick cause it has more buttons, and it comes with the machine, most joysticks have 1 button. And the keyboard don't have a F12 KEY that would bring up the Vice Menu. I use my THEC64 Joystick, but that cause it the best one, it came with THEVIC20 but it very clicky, it sounds abit like a lighter when it clicks...

In Vice one has to press the "Menu button" on the joystick for Vice's menu. Yes, you can access Vice internal menu with menu button on the joystick. To access PCUAE Vice config menu you need to hold joystick Menu and press joystick fire exactly the same as accessing the menu from Carousel. There is a difference between pressing and releasing menu button (Vice settings menu) and holding menu button then pressing fire (PCUAE Vice config menu).

I`ve tied taking a Print Screen while Vice is Playing the game at full screen then using Photoshop to resize the image, also I`ve tried saving a saved file within Usb Carousel and using the .png file. Nothing comes close to how clear RGL have done it am I missing something has anyone else got it right. Here`s 2 images one was done by Nick or RGL and the second by me. any help will be grateful as I`m aiming for perfection lol

You be able to use and boot from start up the C64DTV(in VICE Mode) including its Flash Rom so it boots in to its menu with the games on, turning the machine into a fully working C64 DTV 2 or 3 PAL(you can use VICE menu to change it to NTSC if you like too but the games and menu will run be faster I think).
VICE only supports C64DTV Versions 2 and 3 only so not version 1 that was NTSC(I have both C64 DTV versions).

Hello
thank you for all your work on PCUsb. I had some questions and apologies if these have been addressed already - is it possible for C64 mini to run vic 20 games; - when do you expect to release PCUSB 1.4.4 - I am keen to see the C64 mini version; -for SSI games (like champions of krynn) that need a save disk, how does that work on the C64 mini, does it save automatically or do you need to create a virtual disk? I am not tech savvy - so find most of this a bit confusing.... - do you think you will be adding more C64 titles to 1.4.4? thanks again

In the next version the C64 Mini can run Full VICE emulation of the Vic20 including cartridges and Megacart
The C64 Mini cannot launch Vic20 from the Carousel at this time.
I am helping Nick debug the next version now, it will not be too long now.
You can create your own carousels and import from C64 Gamebase and demobase for C64 to use on the mini - see the PCU Game Manager thread.
Depending on the game, with a bit of setting up you can save to a disk image or you can save to a save state.

Hopefully v1.4.4 shall feature some nice improvements for the Maxi ?
I've installed v1.4.3, it's a super product. Well done Nick, JJ, Ian, and co.

JJ or other knowledgeable folk,
On the Maxi, is X-Windows v3 safe to use?
For tasks like file management (moving, copying, deletion of files or directories), editing (renaming) of filenames or directory names, or text file creation and editing - such as with CJM files.
It hasn't been updated since Feb 2020. Is that because it's super-stable (hopefully so), or has it just gone into a state of dormancy?
Are there any Maxi users who can vouch for it?
Thanks.

I have used it after really messing up a nand and then recovery had an image will extra games so I deleted them all and put back the stock ones ok.
I stick with messign with the USB and not the nand now.
Next PCUAE has Midnight commander so you can use that instead of Linux if desired.
Yaft shell also has some commands available - not tested it that extensively.

If Midnight Commander in the upcoming v.1.4.4 is the easiest and safest method for file management and text file editing, then I'll happily go with that. I've no Linux knowledge. I do have dated UNIX and vi editor knowledge from using SunOS in a work environment decades ago, hopefully this shall be sufficient to find my way around.

The X windows click navigation and copy paste was useful as Midnight Commander or similar is not something I have used since about 1992.
It is easy to delete stuff but there is a way back if you really break the carousel and it will not start. Tricky but doable. ;-)
There is no need to mess with the nand anymore really.
PCUAE will run multiple carousels and all Vice machines on Mini or TheC64 or TheVic20.
You can have 10,000+ items from Gamebase and demobase on PCUAE USB in carousels or loadable in Vice if you want.
