Hi to all, as this is my first post to this great forum!
I used to own a C64 Mini and since some days now I am the proud owner of a C64 Maxi. Well, I also have 3 x C64s and a VIC-20 but who's counting!
Anyway, let me come to the point of my post: as I'm not happy (at all) with the C64 Maxi included joystick, I tried some other solutions. A cheapo PSX-like USB gamepad seems to be working fine but that too isn't great for games like Ghosts n' Goblins or Neutron (i.e. platformers and shoot 'em ups). At least I don't find it comfortable at all for 8bit games. So, I tried the USB joystick adapter from Retronic Design, which seems to be the most handy and system independent adapter of all out there. I connected a simple 4way-1button Atari/Commodore style controller to it, but it didn't seem to work at all with the C64 Maxi. After some research here and on the Retronic website I found out that I had to update the firmware of the adapter and so I did.
So, I connected once again the adapter and the joystick to the C64 Maxi and boom: I was able to move through the Carousel, select a game and play it with my controller! Everything seemed great, until I tried some .PRG files and some .D64 images: the adapter suddenly wouldn't work on the games, but it did work on the C64 menus (expept the fire button - I had to press the <RETURN> key). I then tried to create a .CJM file (it can be found here) but then the joystick wouldn't work at all on the games - on the menus I still could navigate using the controller and the <RETURN> key. Needless to mention that I tried all kinds of games, i.e. older ones too that use the 1st C64 joystick port.
So, the question is: is this the way that Retronic Design's USB adapter works with the C64 Maxi or am I doing something wrong? Any help would be handy as I really like the C64 Maxi and I really don't like at all its controller!
