My Mini has developed a problem. Everytime I run a game from the USB stick, it eventually crashes right to the Carousel. It apparently does it with any game. In addition, even with the Carousel games, sometimes the joystick becomes unresponsive or stuck (i.e. keeps going left or right even without input) and I have to either unplug/plug the stick or reboot the Mini. Basket case?

yes it's not very cool..Have you done the latest firmware upgrade?...how do you launch your games, under basic or by the file loader?
Fort the joystick it can be a compatibility issue, be sur to keep it pluged to the first usb port (that's what I do, don't any more bug).
when you turn off your mini use the button right to it.
Could be a problem with the mini itself, the worst case would be to eventually by another one..at this time it's not that expensive but hey I understand it's certainly not what you want first ^^

The firmware is the latest. I launch the games with the file loader. The joystick is the original one and it is plugged on the first port, but plugging it to the second port does not solve the issue. I always turn the Mini off with the button. I am under the impression that it's the joystick cable (slight) movement that causes this. Like it briefly makes a false contact with the pins on the port, and can this cause the OS to reset to the carousel?

I'm pretty sure it's a USB connection problem. If I wiggle the cable a bit, the game resets. Much as if I unplug the cable. The default behaviour of the OS seems to be to reset to the Carousel every time something is connected or disconnected. Hence my issue. By the way, when I was playing the joystick snapped; the infamous problem. I managed to fix it with the long screw method, it's a bit wigglier than before, but all in all there is a quality problem with the stick and the USB ports. Disappointed. I think I will keep the mini as a cool item to display in my living room, but as a working game machine it just makes little to no sense compared to running VICE on the same TV set. Too bad.

Does wiggling the joystick cable make it happen regardless whether you have plugged it in the first or second USB port? In that case it's likely to be an issue with the joystick rather than with the Mini. If you plug the joystick into a PC, and wiggle a bit does it also connect/disconnect? If it only happens with one of the USB ports then probably that port has developed a loose/bad connection to the PCB. In which case you might be able to fix that by resoldering the USB port to the PCB.

It has happened on both ports, so perhaps it's really a dodgy joystick. I hope so (though honestly the Mini has a few glitches of its own, sometimes when I quit a File Loader game it freezes and I have to reboot it). This joystick is a disgrace anyway; I don't mind it not being microswitched, but it's guaranteed to break, I think we should get a voucher for a new one (hopefully they got it right with the most recent production batch).
