So we know for a fact that a firmware upgrade (.bin) can have a "new" game in it. Is there something stopping us from taking that BIN and injecting a different game image in there OTHER than Galencia?
Probably over simplifying it here ...

Somebody posted a video on how to add more to the carousel. Not sure if was posted here already: Seems a game requires two images, a thumb and a bigger thumb. Also text for description in 5 or so languages. If anybody opens the (.bin) and presumably finds the locations of the games files, and also has there own replacement images and game and carousel file/s... Sounds very intriguing. Update: Think this is the same tutorial: thec64community.online/thread/76/thec64-modding-games-little-guide

I'm interested in a non hardware solution.

I'm interested in a non hardware solution. I cannot open the (.bin) with 7zip. And don't have magiciso or any other program to convert it. But if somebody can convert the (.bin) to an (.ISO) they could go on to extract it's contents with 7zip. I only brought up the tutorial because it showed what comprises a game in the carousal. I think you are correct that there should be a way to do this by firmware edit. Fascinating idea! Too bad we have to wait for the source, but 3 years isn't a long time to wait. By then these mini will be selling on ebay for $500.

My guess is that the updates are "signed" so even figuring the format and being able to modify them won't help as the mini won't take them unless properly signed. c128fan, you are mistaken about the source, what they say is that they'll provide it for up to 3 years after the product is discontinued, you can get it right away if you mail them the 5 pounds they require.
