The Amstrad E-Mailer was made in 1999, released in 2000.
Amstrad E3 Videophone Emailer, the OS is Monta Vista Linux and the hardware inside the Amstrad E3 is.. its CPU is a TI OMAP 5910 at 150MHz, with 128KB of NOR flash containing the bootloader, 32MB of NAND flash and 32MB of SDRAM. There's a passive 12bit colour LCD at 480x320, OHCI USB host, a hardware 56k Conexant modem.
This is one of the first devices like the mini consoles to use Linux this way, it works the same way as TheC64 Mini, just has a different GUI(Menu System) on it to make it act like a Landline desk phone but the E3 has a ZX Spectrum emulator on it too so you could download ZX Spectrum Games to play on it, you could sent emails, text messages, faxes and surf the Internet too.
How they worked was it would download a config file that would top it up(like a PAY AS YOU GO phone)and would disable itself in 90 days(it has a timer inside it counting down) if it never connected to Amserve, now the service has ended(in 2011) they now disable themselves if they never got a config file change in the weeks it was up for before the service was close down, so most emailer are now disabled and don't function no more, they might power on but say on the screen "Press the {Email} button to restore service" or "Press {Email} button to get connected"
Here is mine playing Space Invaders and Tetris..
I have all the models of the emailer now(E1, E2 and E3)they become disabled after 90 days(3 months) if they don't have the configuration change on it and stops working, would love to have the E3 to stop it disabling anyone good at good at this thing, hacking into a Linux device...?
