I tried installing PCUAE for the first time recently. I have a TheC64 (not the mini). I used the PCUAE manager, which loaded v4.50 onto the drive. I installed PCUAE with the default carosel, VICE, Linux and a Spectrum emulator. I have not yet tried either Linux or Spectrum modes but have a few issues with PCUAE and VICE. First, in PCUAE mode, if I select the USB icon from carosel mode, it comes up with "Can not read USB stick". What is going on here? It is able to load all the installed modes from the USB stick, so why does it state in carosel mode that it can not read the stick? Changing to classic mode did not make any difference. This happened with 3 different USB drives I used, a Silicon Power 128GB USB3.0, Toshiba 32GB USB2.0, and Verbatim 16GB USB3.0, all three drives had exactly the same result. I don't care about carosels and prefer to load all my games directly from basic, but how am I supposed to load anything at all if it can not even "see" the stick even in carosel mode? VICE sees the drive without issue to load games, so why can't PCUAE see it? Second, In Vice mode, when using the C128 and I change to 80 column mode, it only shows 64 characters on the screen, the rightmost 16 characters are cut off. I tried changing some settings (one at a time) but everything I tried just screwed the display up forcing me to change the setting back. Is there some series of settings I can change to display the full 80 column mode on the screen properly or is this something the has not been fixed? Finally, when changing modes, most of the time when the computer reboots, it boots into normal TheC64 mode instead of loading from the USB, forcing me to power cycle the computer to make it load. Why is this happening? Also the last time I loaded the mode changer it just locked up and I had to force a reboot by holding the power button in to turn it off before back on and then it finally loaded the mode changer. That was a bit clunky.
VICE mode looks interesting but PCUAE mode should work properly too, if I can't get this problems resolved I may just install it all and forget it ever existed.

what kind off power adapter you use ? must be 3 amps gr Wizart Yeah I'm using a 3 amp power supply. I had to wait a couple of weeks after installing PCUAE on my USB stick since I noticed that in the install notes and had to order one.

Do I simply install 4.5.1 over the top of the old one on my USB or do I need to need to install it to a new formatted USB? And when I Put in my TheC64, does it just pick up that it's a new version and update what it needs to on the firmware, or do I need to uninstall the old one first and then install the new one?

Format the USB, copy the latest software over and then boot it up. The minor change to firmware will be handled by PCUAE

Okay, I got to try v4.5.2 on my TheC64 today, and except for the unstable rebooting, all the same problems I had remain.
1. In PCUAE mode, when I select the USB icon from the carosel mode, it states "Can not read USB stick". It also does the same if I switch it to classic mode.
2. In VICE, C128 mode, it does not display 80 column mode properly, it only displays 64 characters across the screen, with the rightmost 16 columns cut off.
3. Another thing with VICE, C128 mode - when connecting 2 joysticks, the second joystick does not work AT ALL. Let me explain: When playing on TheC64, the joystick that comes with the computer, while microswitched, feels rather cheap and plasticy, and sometimes some directions (particularly down and left) stick and need to be manually repositioned to the center. The fire button sticks down sometimes too. Because of this I hook up and use a Speedlink Competition Pro USB joystick, which is far superior in every aspect, and I use the Joystick swap function built into TheC64's firmware to swap Joystick ports so I can always play with the Competition Pro.
IN VICE, the C64, Plus4 and C128 all have options under MACHINE SETTINGS, JOYSTICK SETTINGS to configure joystick 1 and 2. By default port 2 is autoconfigured in "Joystick device 2", which is TheC64 joystick, and in "Joystick device 1" I select "Joystick", which autoconfigures to my Competition Pro to port 1.
In both C64 and Plus4 mode, both Joysticks work perfectly, and I can use the SWAP JOYSTICK PORTS option in the Joystick settings menu in both modes to swap ports 1&2, swapping the physical joysticks so TheC64 joystick goes to port 1 and the Competition Pro to port 2. In addition, both joysticks can be used in the options menu to navigate and select options (I still need TheC64 stick to get into the options menu though).
However, in C128 mode, this does not work. When I set up Joystick port 1 in the same manner, it simply does not work, and using a joystick testing program in C128, it simply does not work, only port 2 is being read. "Swap joystick ports" still works, but that does not fix the virtual port the Competition Pro is attached to. Furthermore, the Competition Pro does not register at all in the options menu in the way it does under C64 and Plus4 modes, further signifying that the "Joystick device 1" option is not working in the options menu.
4. I'm sometimes having problems switching computer modes in VICE (CTRL1-7). Sometimes it doesn't register and I have to try a second time (or more). This did not happen in 4.5.0 -------------------------------------
Of the above problems, 3 is the most crucial to me, being able to properly configure and use my Competition Pro under "Joystick Device 1" in VICE C128 mode, as I would like to use the C128 mode to take advantage of C64 games that use the C128's 2mHz mode (such as Ferrari Formula 1 and Grand Prix Circuit, and I know they run In VICE C128 mode on TheC64, as I've tried) to speed up games, plus the small selection of C128 games, and be able to play them all using my Competition Pro Joystick instead of the awful Joystick that comes with the system.
#2 would be nice if it could be fixed, but not particularly crucial to me, as I don't really have much to use in 80 column mode anyway, but I would like to try out some of the C128 80 column demos that have been made.
#1 I could personally care less about, as I can just use TheC64's stock firmware to load and play my C64 & VIC20 games, and I don't care for carosels, but it should still be looked into.
So those are my experiences. I know I can not force any of the devs to do anything about what I've said, but if the "Joystick device 1" issue when using VICE C128 mode could be fixed I would be eternally grateful.

Can you do this on Vice on a PC?
If so it may be possible to update to do this provided the version of Vice used in PCUAE also has this feature.

Yes, I have the latest version of Vice 3.8, both GTK and SDL versions, and all of the above I noted with using two joysticks and swapping joystick ports works on all of the PC VICE versions, C64, Plus4 AND C128.
I believe the VICE in PCUAE is based on the SDL version of PC VICE, since the interface is the same as the SDL version.
