This is the closest forum category I could find on here so posting this question here. Was recently given a non working handheld that has no name on it and none on the board. Near as I can tell it's called the Sega Ultimate Handheld and came out 7 years ago, unless it's a cheap clone or that handheld. It won't power on even if plugged into USB. It has an old style flip phone removable battery which is bad and I think it's one of those devices that won't allow it to power up unless the battery is working even if it's plugged into USB. Wonder if anybody knows of a mod to bypass this so it will run solely off USB? I'd like to at least verify if it works before buying a new battery for it. Also does anybody know of any firmware mods for it to expand the systems it can emulate? It's white in color so I'm thinking of painting it C64 breadbin color and using it as a C64 handheld and for other retro platforms.

It's the white one in the above picture you posted. If this thing had a simple two contact battery I'd just test it by rigging up a lithium battery to it but this battery has three contact points, so I'm assuming it's third pin is some kind of communication line. I dug up an old flip phone with a working removable battery but turns out it's slightly different in size and it's three contacts won't match up to the handheld. The battery it uses is probably only $5 but I hate to buy one for it and find out it has further issues.
Really dislike small devices that won't allow themselves to power up on USB alone and require a battery even though they have a USB port for charging. Then again it might be that this handheld draws more current that the old USB micro plug can handle? Doubt that since my GPS with a much bigger screen uses the same old plug type.

I connected a 6V adapter (it takes 5V but its was the only adapter I had at the time) to my the C64 DTV and connected it to the battery connectors so you might be able to bypass the power plug by connecting a 5V adapter to its battery connectors. Make sure it take 5v first.

Yeah I'll probably try rigging up a lithium ion battery to try on it. With further research it appears the third contract on these old flip phone batteries is usually a temperature probe to monitor the battery during charging or use so it doesn't get too hot.
Some devices use this contact to confirm the battery is an "authorized" brand name by reading a authorization code, but usually it's only big brand name devices that bother to do that and want you to only buy their battery. I doubt this cheap handheld cares about that, so it's probably a temperature line.
Also, some batteries use this line to simply tell the device what size it is, and they do this by using a resistor. The device reads the resistance value and based on how many ohms it is they can tell what the battery size (capacity) is.
I'll try using an old flip phone battery and using wires to temporarily hook it up to the circuit board battery contact points to see if it will power up.
