How to run Atari 2600, 7800 ROM Games from USB Drive on the Atari2600 Plus(DEEPLAY MOD)
===================================================================
PCUAE Atari2600 Plus Deeplay USB ROM Loader(In PCUAE NOW)
============================================
This is now in PCUAE.
To Download PCUAE for Atari, click on this link and select PCUAE Atari Edition in the Menu: github.com/CommodoreOS/PCUAE/releases/download/v4.4.0/pcuae-v4.4.0-main-4all-standalone-setup.exe
This now supports the Atari Gamestation Pro too now.
You can change PCUAE Mode with the keyboard:
Use CTRL and F keys to change the Mode.
They will show on the screen what key does what now.
Atari Mode
Amiga Mode
MSX/Colecovison Mode
This now has Stella included so you can run it as a Mode on it now.
Missile Command from the 10 in 1 Game Cartridge running in Stella.
Download: github.com/CommodoreOS/PCUAE
You will need:
Hopefully this part will be easier now.
A Mini USB OTGUSB Cable(Sony EC310 Micro USB OTG Cable works) www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-EC310-MicroUSB-Adapter-Cable-Black/dp/B00XG8KDVO
www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2334524.m570.l1313&_nkw=Sony+EC310+MicroUSB+to+USB+Adapter+OTG+Cable
They do say you can use a Micro USB to USB-C Adapter then plug in the Sony USBOTG cable into it and then a 4 port hub thats powered so it powers the Atari2600 Plus because your using its USB-C port that powers it, I have try a few adapters and none have worked so far, you can not use a USB-C USBOTG cable, the Atari2600 Plus USB-C port is not complaint with USBOTG USB-C, so you might have to experiment abit to get the USB Drive to work with it and get the right adapter for the USB-C port that works, its a bit hit or miss, but the easiest way is above and use a Sony OTG Cable and the micro USB port inside the console, it worked first time for me.
A screw driver to open the Atari2600+, if you can not get the USB Drive working from the USB-C port, you have to use the micro USB port on its main board.
When booting from the USB Drive make sure the Color switch is on B/W, USB Drive Mode, if you leave it on Color you should see the USB Drive apear on your Windows PC, if you do its working OK, you just need to switch it on B/W and restart the machine.
Inside the PCUAE USB Drive, in `\.options\atari2600_plus_options_flag_file` folder you should see a file that called `pcuae_settings.txt` you can change PCUAE settings in there to make PCUAE do something like run a Mode, if you do not have a USB Keyboard or THEGamepad to change its settings.
Installing the PCUAE Update on the Atari2600 Plus
==================================================
Its now a lot easier to install PCUAE on the Atari2600 Plus.
You need to flash the `update-boot-pcuae-atari2600-plus.img` to the Atari2600-Plus to boot PCUAE on it, it replaces the dmenu.bin file in the /oem partition so it boots PCUAE from the USB Drive.
Steps:
1. Put Atari2600 Plus Color Switch on Color and Hold Down the Reset switch for 2 to 3 seconds and plug in its USB-C cable in the PC, make sure you can see it on your PC and its driver is installed, if you have updated the Atari2600 Plus with a firmware update before so like 1.1-rev1, 1.1-rev2 and 1.1x-rx2 then you just need do the same but flash the `update-boot-pcuae-atari2600-plus.img` instead to the Atari2600 Plus, this only replaces the /oem partition only, it does not touch the rootfs file system.
2. You need to click on `RKDevTool.exe` in the `START-PCUAE-ON-ATARI2600-PLUS` folder, on the `PCUAE USB Drive`, you should see the application window open and a status message of 'Found one MASKROM device'.
3. Press the tab Upgrade Firmware button then press the Firmware button.
4. Find `update-boot-pcuae-atari2600-plus.img` thats in the `START-PCUAE-ON-ATARI2600-PLUS` folder and press Open.
5. You should see the IMG prepped in the window, then Press Upgrade button to start flashing the update to the Atari2600 Plus.
The update uploads in about 30 seconds.

If you need to install Maskrom driver because `no device found` in the `RKDevTool.exe` app on the PC(Windows) then install the driver thats in the `DriverAssitant_v5.12` folder in `START-PCUAE-ON-ATARI2600-PLUS` folder., you need to open Device Manager to install the Atari2600 Plus Maskrom Driver and look for Unknown Device.
If you need help with installing Maskrom driver and installing the PCUAE update you can look at the 1.1-rev1 install instruction by Ben(its installed the same way) that are here: forums.atariage.com/topic/358796-atari-2600-beta-update-11
Once you have installed the PCUAE Update it should boot PCUAE from the PCUAE USB Drive, make sure you boot from the PCUAE USB Drive first so it boots PCUAE then after that you will be able to boot without the PCUAE USB Drive plugged in so you can load a cartridge in the slot using the firmware.
If it does not find the PCUAE USB Drive then it will load the `Dumper` instead from the firmware and load the cartridge thats in the slot.
At the moment the 2 switches(Select and Reset) on the Atari2600 Plus do not work with Retroarch but do with Stella, I need to find a way of adding them, they are controlled by the dmenu.bin file and on a different device called `Deeplay` so are not part of the `USB Controller` and this bypassing the `dmenu.bin` at the moment so is only loading `Retroarch and its cores`.
Enable/Disable Dumper/Core
===========================
If you enable the Dumper then it disables the USB Rom Loader.
When you enable the dumper and load a game from a cartridge it will make a backup of it and sent it to the USB Drive too.
You can now switch modes by using THEA500 Gamepad plugged in to a USB Port so you:
Press and hold Menu button and then a button to run a shortcut, if it does nothing when you hold the buttons down let go of them then it will do that shortcut.
You will see what button does what on the screen now.
It now loads the rom file it sees in the PCUAE USB Drive Letter(H:):\PCUAE-Atari-Games\Run_From_USB folder so they have to be named correctly so:
Load Rom File from Run_From_USB folder
======================================
Atari VCS 2600 = Atari2600-1.bin
Atari 7800 = Atari7800-1.bin
Copy a game into the Run_From_USB folder and then make a copy of it then rename the copy to the right name so say copy the rom `Pole Position II (PAL) (Atari) (1987).a78` so you now have two copies of the file so when you name the copy you know what rom it loading in that folder so you rename `Pole Position II (PAL) (Atari) (1987) - Copy.a78`to `Atari7800-1.bin`
so you always have a copy of the rom in there so you know what `Atari7800-1.bin`is.
If it has a different extension still name it `Atari2600-1.bin` or `Atari7800-1.bin`, Retroarch will see what type of game it is so does not matter what extension it is so if its a .a78, it will still load it.
You can run roms in it but have to have a cartridge in the slot(10 in1 cartridge) now so it loads the ROM and so the switches work on the console, you can disable the DMenu too(CTRL-D) if you want so it just loads Retroarch but the switches do not work then, do not know why.
Here is the help screen from the PCUAE shortcut key selector, you see it in Putty if you press CTRL on the keyboard, I made mainly for me so I know what key does what and I can easy copy it and post it if I need too...
Pick `CTRL-0` to load your own game then put ROM in `/PCUAE-Atari-Games/Run_From_USB` folder and name it `Atari2600-1.bin`(2600 game) or `Atari7800-1.bin`(7800 game) then put the USB Drive back in the Atari2600 Plus and it should load the ROM file when you start the console.
You only see the key combo below if the DMenu is disabled, it does not work or show if the DMenu is enabled.
Once you flash the img to the console you should not need to press any shortcuts or anything or do anything, just make sure it can see the USB Drive properly, once it starts to load PCUAE it will come up with a blue screen saying it setting up PCUAE so please wait, it will only takes about a couple of minutes to do that then it will then reboot itself and reboot PCUAE.
Then after that you can use the shortcuts on the keyboard or THEGamepad.
If you have no keyboard or THEGamepad you can change PCUAE settings if you go into `\.options\atari2600_plus_options_flag_files` you see a .txt file in there called `pcuae_settings.txt` you can change the PCUAE settings in that file by changing the `no` to `yes` in it or use the shortcuts on the keyboard, I made it before adding the shortcuts to the keyboard so you had a way of changing them, when you use a shortcut on the keyboard the settings in the file will change too so will change the `no` to `yes` or `yes` to `no` in the file, they are connected.
Some of the shortcut on the keyboard and on THEGamepad are on the screen but not all of them they would not all fit on the screen so just the main ones are shown, you can see all over them in this post.
It copies the dump of the cartridge to: `\.options\dumper-download` before loading it, it copies the cartridge in Stella Cartridge Mode and Original Cartridge Mode automatically to that folder.
PCUAE-Settings.txt file below:
Here are the Shortcut Keys on the keyboard:
Here are the Shortcuts on THEGamepad:
Thinking about THEGamepad, the Atari Joystick might work from THE400 Mini too, I give it a try when I get it, and the shortcuts from THEGamepad might work on it too.
Hope this helps...
Have a nice day, Are you gonna play Atari Today...
