Hi Everyone,
I'm a new user of the forum and have tried trawling the net and this board for some info regarding the thread title without gleaning much information. Hopefully, someone can help me in my predicament?
Having owned a C64 mini for a while using it sparingly, I recently took the plunge and ordered what I presumed to be one of the better options for upgrading the bundled joystick to enhance playability.
A year or so ago I watched Madlittlepixel's video on the Speedlink Competition Pro Extra joystick and its compatibility with the C64 mini, noting his confirmation that it could be used with the system and afforded better than basic functionality. After periodic deliberation on whether or not to pull the trigger on a purchase, I received said joystick today and eagerly started using it to access my library of games via USB. Alas, I have since discovered that I cannot use the space bar in the virtual keyboard to start cracked games as there is no mapping (using the latest c64 mini firmware 1.6.x) currently available.
Can anyone suggest a solution or perhaps a workaround?
To be honest, I'm loathed to alter any config files unless absolutely necessary and I unfortunately don't have the requisite level of knowledge regarding cracked game files to know where to look for versions which don't require the spacebar to start.
Can anyone help? Because at this juncture it looks like I've just purchased another joystick which has limited usability.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated - thanks.

Doesn't the mini and maxi have a menu option to reassign keys to joystick buttons? I've never had the need to do it so maybe I'm wrong, or maybe I'm thinking of the A500 mini which I think has this option built into the menu? You can at least edit the config text file to remap keys on the mini or maxi. Simply make a copy of the original to save on your computer so if you screw up you can replace the altered file. Another possibility is to run project carousel and launch a newer more full featured version of Vice and change the mapping in it's menu options. Again, I haven't done any of this before so I may have details wrong somebody can correct me on.
Although I don't think it's your particular problem, I did run across some info a while back that at least on older firmware certain versions of the Competition Pro won't be automatically recognized based on who manufactured it. That may have been corrected in newer firmware, or at least can be fixed by altering the controller config file.
Btw, BastichB 64k did a excellent video on his channel a few years ago showing how to easily remap keys to the joystick buttons on the mini and maxi, specifically for the same reasons you want to. Things like assigning the spacebar and other commonly used keys to buttons.

Was trying to paste a link to that video but my clipboard isn't working for some reason so just do a YouTube search for BastichB 64K C64 mini CJM files and it will pop up.
