Hi everyone I love my c64 and still play it a lot. I last turned it on on Monday and all was well. Yesterday, I turned the power switch on and no red led light. The fateful day had arrived where it looked like my C64 had died. Not being very techie. I started by changing the 13 amp in the plug. Unfortunately that didn’t do it. I’ve been watching some YouTube videos and have opened up the 64. Everything looks surprisingly in tact apart from two silver ‘boxes on the right hand side’. Both look like they might have burnt out? I tried rubbing the marks off in case it was dirt but not much is coming off. I have taken photos but it looks like I can’t upload them on the forum. Below is a link to the two boxes I’m referring to. I have the breadbin 64 www.oldcomputr.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/commodore_64-motherboard.jpgI’m wondering which way to go next. I am guessing I should buy a multimeter and see if the power supply is dead? I would happily take it to someone who knows what they’re doing if anyone knows someone closish to Southampton (UK)? I just don’t fancy sending it away and not seeing what work is done and blindly paying a bill. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Were you using the original power supply? If so, they are prone due to age and heat to fail and put out too high of voltage, especially if it's one of the ones that is real heavy, which indicates the entire internals were covered in an epoxy that held in the heat. If it's failed and put out too high of voltage then chances are a bunch of internal chips have been burned out. That's why people usually use a new aftermarket power supply, or plug a over voltage failsafe circuit in between the power supply and the C64.
I would do two things: Buy an aftermarket power supply and also one of the diagnostic cartridges. Get the version that has a switch so you can run two different diagnostic programs. These will often take over control of a broken C64 and show you what components are bad. If the cartridge can't manage to even get the screen to come on I believe the cartridge will flash a diagnostic code.
By far the most common failure of a C64 is the power supply, so chances are it's failed. The only question is did it burn out the chips.
I'd also recommend you ask your question on the Lemon64 forum because there's a better chance people with the right knowledge will have answers for you. You also have a good chance on there to find somebody willing to repair it for you.

Thanks so much for your help! Yes, I have one of the old heavy power supplies. I will start by buying a new modern one.
I am having real problems with Lemon64. I have an account that I think may have been deactivated but essentially when I contact the board administrator for help, it says ‘the board administrator has been disabled’. I can’t remember my username and you can’t use your email address only with password to log in. So I have reset my password, it also recognises my email, but because I can’t remember my username and can’t reset it, I can’t get into lemon! I like that forum too!
Thanks again

In the last 10 minutes I’ve realised that the email that contains my password reset for Lemon64 also contains my username! Doh!
So if I don’t get anywhere with the new power supply (just ordered one), I will give them a shout.

Lemon64 recently changed to new software which allows you to view the board easily using a phone, but everybody has to request a new password to log on. Just put in your email address after hitting the request new password function and it will send you the link to do so. Check your spam mailbox if you don't see it after a few minutes. It's nice they have updated the site so you can easily view it using a phone now. You had to constantly zoom in on stuff if you were using a phone before.
