I updated my firmware on my maxi to 1.6.1 and all went well. Then I copied project carousel to a usb drive and proceeded to install. Seemed to work fine but when it reboots, it just freezes and the music stops on the project carousel anniversary screen. I shut it back down and now the maxi takes about a minute to boot and the emulation is broken, some games wont even load. I tried factory reset, re-installing the firmware and even a better power supply with no luck.
Did I ruin my maxi?

I've had to downgrade my firmware back to 1.3.0 to get my maxi to work properly again. I upgraded to 1.6.1 and have tried several times to get PCUAE working but I get the same error every time, after the intial autoboot setup, the system reboots, shows the C64 logo for a few seconds then the PCUAE logo and just hangs there as the menu music plays. The music stops after a few minutes and I have to force power off the machine. I take the usb drive out and the stock system is broken again, broken emulation and bad audio.
I'm totally stuck and really want to run PCUAE but I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've followed the WIKI exactly.

I have almost the same problem... You can tray to use button combinations on The Joystik, to get into mode or carousel games changer, while pcuae logo is shown on the screen (it works for me but sometimes carousel changer wont respond).

Thanks for the response! I will give that a try and see if i get any results.
The only other thing I can think of is trying a different brand of flash drive / memory stick, just realized out of all five that I've used, they are all sandisk.

Did you guys have any other issues with Project Carousel before you installed autoboot? I'm mainly curious about any platform emulation such as Amiga, Vic20, Atari 2600, etc. I'd prefer not to install autoboot because I want to see the latest firmware as is and then later go beyond that by doing the fake firmware update without actually altering the firmware which autobooot would require and could cause potential issues like you're experiencing. Also curious if Amiga emulation of the advanced chipset such as what was featured on the Amiga 1200 has any problems such as slowdown issues? I would figure the hardware the C64 Mini or maxi has can't emulate much beyond the Amiga or something like a Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo.

I couldn't start a single amiga game from tiny launcher, got black screen or errors...also after a few tries, tiny launcher become messed up too. I reverted firmware to 1.3 today, an updated it to 1.6.1., and everythin works fine now. I'll continue to use pi 400 as amiga.

Isn't the Pi400 in short supply like the Pi4, or are you one of the lucky ones who managed to get one?
I'm seriously considering getting a Orange Pi 800 because it seems even more perfect for retro gaming with features like a built in VGA port besides HDMI, which comes in real handy for older VGA monitors. There's a huge amount of cheap ones out there on the used market in various aspect ratios. HDMI to VGA dongles are cheap enough at around $10 to $20 but it's less clutter having it built in.
The Orange Pi also offers the ability to do dual displays out both the HDMI and VGA port, built in flash memory so no need for a USB stick or SD card to boot, etc. First time I've ever considered buying something else that isn't a Raspberry Pi.
I've got a 3B+ and there seems to be much more software support for it than the Pi4 because of the ongoing shortages that started shortly after the Pi4 came on the market. There were plenty of 3B+ units already sold.

I was finally able to get PCUAE to work, I just had to use version 1.8.5b10. even after restarting the system stock, it runs great with no corruption.
