Hi all I got a C64 mini a couple of weeks ago and decided to update the firmware but it’s not showing the firmware file on the usb stick (it’s the only file on there) I have done a bit of research but can’t seem to find an answer as to why. I’m using a 16Gb Sandisk Cruzer. I’ve used Diskpart to clean it, set it up as FAT32 and carried out a full format. I have also confirmed it shows as having an MBR in Disk Manager.
On the C64, it shows the USB icon and I can go into it and then the System Information folder. As I said above, this is empty. The only thing on the USB is just the firmware file
Is there something im missing? Thanks in advance

Are you trying to load the firmware update via the regular USB icon that you can load games from? If so I made the same mistake the first time I updated the firmware because it won't show there, you have to go to the system information (or whatever it is) option in the menu and it will then ask if you want to update it.

I have a similar Problem. I have TheC64Mini with firmware version "theC653-1.0.1-argent" and tried to upgrade its firmware to the actual 1.6.1 The USB drive is not recognized. I followed the instructions and formatted it as FAT32 and checked for the MBR. I tried it with an 4 GB USB drive and with an external virtual 100 MB USB drive on an external SSD. (Samsung EVO with IODD-Case) I tried both USB interfaces of TheC64Mini. I checked the SHA256-FileHash to rule out a download error. The USB drive doesn't even show up in the carousel menue - and so I cant't choose to upgrade the firmware in the settings. Maybe someone of you has an idea how to solve this.

First, be sure you use a USB stick of 32 gigs or less and format to Fat32. Some say that a larger USB stick is not an issue if it's formatted correctly but others say not to use anything bigger than 32 gig. Next, be sure you use a USB stick others say works because certain brands don't. Also, make sure you don't use the USB icon on the carousel where you'd load games because it won't show up there. You have to use the mini or maxi menu listings and go to system information (or whatever it's called). And make sure you don't put the update in any folder and make sure you plug in the USB before powering up. For the maxi Retro Games Ltd says to plug the USB into the back USB port. For the mini I just plugged it into the further back port on the side since it only has two. They also recommend having nothing else plugged in other than the USB stick and stock joystick when doing a firmware update. I picked up two of the SanDisk 32GB Ultra USB 3.0 Flash Drives (pic below) for both my mini and maxi because I wanted faster 3.0 speed for configuring on a PC and for future use if they weren't dedicated to the mini or maxi. They work fine. I should also add that one of these two USB sticks that I had successfully used to update the firmware with I later setup for a PC USB boot into a Linux retro gaming PC setup. Even though I reformatted it and tried using it again on the mini I couldn't get it to recognize the firmware update. When I check the properties of that USB stick it doesn't show anything near 32 gigs, so I'm guessing it's now a split two storage device partition somehow and when I installed the latest firmware on it it's not available to the mini or Maxi to see. I probably have to do a complete reformat with special software on that USB stick because even if I do a Restore Properties option (or whatever it's called) format on windows it still only shows way less than 32 gigs. Thank you. It was the cheap USB drive. I formatted one of my SanDisk ones and that one did the job.

Or you can use Rufus.. rufus.ie Run it and pick FreeDOS and then press start, once finished open usb stick and remove any dos files in there so all thats in there is `System Volume Information` folder and its done, it works everytime... then you can copy games too it or Install PCUAE too it and should find it.
