Both systems had pros and cons in gaming ability in comparison to each other, and that's impressive for the C64 because the NES came out several years later. Personally among other things, besides liking an actual full features computer on the C64 with far more abilities in what you can do (keyboard, printers, modem, disk drives, SID chip, etc) I never liked Nintendo because of the restrictions on allowing third party software to be written for it which made games more expensive.

Btw I'd argue that the only reason the NES, which came out several years later, took hold as a console over other consoles like the Atari 5200 or 7800 is because Nintendo had tons of money to push an advertising campaign.
It never really effected us C64 owners in the states. We never saw the arcade game crash that was mostly among Atari and and other consoles like Colecovision or Intelivision, and we'd laugh at Nintendo owners paying big bucks for cartridges. Mainly the NES was popular among soccer moms and other families who found a home computer intimidating, because at that time many homes didn't own a home computer. They didn't understand it and just wanted an easy way to play games. Nintendo never was one to push leading edge technology. They liked to wait for component prices to drop enough to manufacturer stuff cheap, and then use huge marketing campaigns to convince people they were breaking new ground. Meanwhile Commode was pushing technology by manufacturing their own custom chips.
Also meanwhile, us C64 owners knew that ground was already plowed by companies like Commodore years prior. The fact that the C64 of several years earlier was more than capable of holding it's own against the NES is testimony to that fact. I remember when Nintendo sued a game maker because Gianna Sisters was too much like Super Mario Brothers. Luckily copies of Gianni Sisters had already got out, and it's a way better game in graphics and sound on the C64 than Super Mario Brothers on the NES.
