It's amazing what that the Plus 4 and memory expanded C16 can do graphics wise when it was intended to be a business and productivity computer. Of course it doesn't have the sound ability of the SID on the C64 or things like sprites, hardware scrolling (I think), or other abilities in gaming performance like the C64 had, but there's no doubt it had a larger color palette and at least could do still pictures with more detail better than the C64.
I always hated the Plus 4 and C16 because I knew right away they'd be a flop being stripped down machines and not compatible with the C64. If anything the C16 might have had a better chance at being a success if they kept it's price point at the $99 Jack Trameil wanted to compete with the the Sinclair ZX81 overseas and the Timex version in the states, but Jack had left Commodore by then and the Timex Sinclair never sold well in the states anyway.
Commodore should have built machines that were more powerful than the C64 and yet tried to keep them as compatible as possible with it.
Hate to say it but I knew they made the same mistake with the 128. I liked it's form factor (especially the D version with detached keyboard) but they should have at least stripped out the CPM mode because by then that business software was a dead standard nobody was using anymore. They would have been better off using the extra expense of CPM mode to further enhance the 128 mode, and this would have enticed more software to be written for it instead of just writing a C64 version it could run.
Really the thing they should have done was ditched the Plus4, C16, and 128, and released the C65. That machine with it's dual SIDs, faster CPU, and graphics on an 8 bit machine rivaled some 16 bit computers. The 8 bit era may have been coming to an end but that machine was light-years ahead of any 8 bit computer ever made. I'm excited about the new Mega65 coming out based on the C65 prototypes that people got their hands on when Commodore went bankrupt. Anyway here's that new Plus4/C16 game......
