I was so happy when I finally got my c64 maxi, it was my childhood back in my hands. but all of my favorite games weren't on it. I was happy to hear I could load games through the usb drive. I found a few sets on archive.org and placed them on the usb. not a single game has loaded successfully and I'm so frustrated. I feel like I've wasted my money. what can I do?

Are any of these games already present on Project Carousel? If so just use that. Remember some games need real drive images or drive emulation if they haven't been modified to work with emulation. My guess is you're using original software which sometimes works with emulated storage devices while many of them expect the 1541 disk drive to respond a certain way. And that's even excluding software that used disk copy protection. Some games were synced to the drive and get very picky if that timing of loading and such is off. That's why using a real commodore 64 many games won't work with the SD2IEC modern storage device, and why things like the Pi1541 or Ultimate II Plus offer full drive emulator modes. But there's tons of versions out there modified to work with non standard new storage.
I'm thinking more than likely you just aren't mounting the disk image properly to work with the Maxi. That usually solves most issues.

I'm trying to get wasteland to work properly but it doesn't save my games correctly and I keep getting I/O errors

I've tried so many of my favorites using the good no intro set and they mostly don't work/won't load. I'm so disappointed right now. I'll be returning mine to amazon.

can anyone out there help me understand why so many games just will not load? gi joe, gauntlet, hillsfar, and on and on. I'm using good images and time after time I get drive error or mostly it will simply not boot and stay at a black screen. I was looking forward to this so much and I'm so incredibly disappointed.

Perhaps you're using a USB stick that the mini or maxi is particular about? Try another one. I honestly haven't heard of people having too many issues with most software unless it's original code still relying on copy protection or something where it needs exact drive emulation. Also make sure your USB power supply is powerful enough. I think it needs at least 2.5 amps? Whatever it is I know some units didn't ship with the right one. Beyond that maybe the unit it's self is faulty.

the stick works with many other games and I'm using the power supply it came with. I've tried a variety of images from different places and in games like gi joe and maniac mansion for example, nothing will boot in every case.

I'd still check to see if those games already exist on Project Carousel and just use that if it does. There's a ton of C64 game versions out there that had copy protection or drive syncing code that won't run on any emulator unless they've been updated for even modern storage devices on original C64 hardware. I'd also make sure you mount the disk image because some games require that to function properly too.

Try a different power supply.

Also try software that's been modified to work with the SD2IEC. I hear there's a bunch of software out there modified to run on it because it's a pretty popular and inexpensive modern storage device for original hardware. All it is is a micro SD card which doesn't really use any drive emulation so anything that works with it should work with any emulator.
