Hey there!
I ordered the Maxi from Amazon and it just arrived a couple days ago and I've noticed that the microswitch controller will randomly register a button press, both in menus and games. Sometimes it seems worse than other times, with often being so bad I can't really navigate at all because it's randomly making selections for me!
I'm running the latest firmware, have tried rebooting, switching USB ports, trying with and without my USB stick inserted.
Now I also have a C64 mini, and for some reason, the mini won't recognize the controller at all, and the old controller works fine in the Maxi without the button click issue.
I'm on the clock for the ability to return to Amazon, and I'd hate to do so if there's a fix (especially because I imported it to Canada from the US, so there's extra BS involved).
Any ideas?

Does it seem like the buttons are sticking or more like a different fault?

What firmware version is your Mini on, if you update to the latest firmware it should recognise the Maxi's joystick.

What firmware version is your Mini on, if you update to the latest firmware it should recognise the Maxi's joystick. Thanks for both your replies. 1. The buttons aren't sticking, and I've actually put the controller down and had it register button presses, so I don't think it's mechanical. I have noticed these buttons feel mushier than the original stick - but I don't know if that's normal. 2. Good call on the Mini. I updated the firmware and it regognized the new controller but with the same results - random button presses. At this point it seems obvious to be a faulty controller. Unless there's a way to update/flash the controller's firmware, it's looking like it's just busted. Is there a way to get Retro games to ship me a replacement or should I return the whole system to Amazon?

100% sure it needs to be Amazon, as you bought it from them. If you want to avoid it then maybe you could open up the joystick and poke around in it... Or purchase an additional THE64 joystick to avoid the US -> Canada BS. AFAIK you can't flash it.
Is it always the same button that is registered as a ghost press?

I'd just buy another controller. Not worth the hassle to ship everything back and hope they don't run out of stock again before you get another maxi.
Thr difference in feel between the maxi and mini controllers is the maxi uses actual microswitches. The mini doesn't. I've had a controller for my RetroPie do that and it was a sticking switch, but I'd open it up and see. You might have a connection short going on. Look on the bright side, if you buy a second controller you'll have a backup one for parts if nothing else.

Yes it's always the same (action) button. I tried on my PC and it's doing the same thing. I don't have the right screwdriver so I'm not going to open it up, I guess I'm processing a return.

Being in Canada, I'm paying a premium for import fees, taxes, exchange rate and shipping - so another microswitch controller is almost $70 USD. That's more than I'm willing to throw at this beyond what I've already paid. I'll do a return and see what happens - I just hate thinking that the whole system is going to get trashed because the controller is broken, I was hoping for a solution where it was something simple or I could replace the part.

Just a quick update. I did a chat support session with Amazon and they processed a return and immediate shipment of a new unit that's already on it's way. Win for me, but I guess the unit will end up in a returns Amazon carton at a liquidation outlet at some point.
I'll leave a note in the box explaining the issue so that when someone buys it they'll know what's up.
Thanks for the quick replies for support! I look forward to getting back to messing around with this thing.

I have two maxi microswitch joysticks. The switches were very sticky out of the box. Ive opened them and put silicone spray in the switches and they feel very smooth like the joysticks in the old times did. ☺
Just use silicone spray, no oil like wd40 or something!
