I think I know why TheC64 Red Stick Joysticks are breaking at the base of the stick were the red ring is, you can see a gap where the 2 parts of the stick is not stuck together properly, You push left or right too hard and the top of the screw get pushed in to the seam and pushes the 2 parts of the stick a part and then the stick breaks off.
The screw in the original C64DTV Joystick is smaller but because THEC64 Red Stick Joystick uses a longer screw it made a hole where the two parts connect together, as soon as you put force on the stick it snaps at that point, the only way to fix it now is put a longer screw in it, then the screw takes the force of you moving the joystick left and right, up and down.
Two Screws.. Left one is from THEC64 Red Stick Joystick 2 inch and the one on the right is from the C64 DTV 1 inch, there has to be a reason why the C64 DTV uses a smaller screw.

Try inserting a washer at the bottom of the screw so that it provides a bit of reinforcement where the screw goes into the shaft. There's a lot of stress placed at that point, which would explain breaking. I haven't broken mine yet, but I am going to experiment tonight.
I know this might sound cheeky but you could always buy a spare stick and then take the broken one back to the shop to get a replacement.
If the stick has not been mistreated and breaks with-in 30 days (by UK standards...), it's classed as not fit for purpose and can be replaced, or ALL your money back. We all know the stick was not fit for purpose the day we bought the machine and I don't mean how it works, but the durability of the stick handle design. I would of gladly paid £100+ for a C64mini with a good stick like a Comp Pro or Zip!!
You have the right to reject your item and get a refund within 30 days of possessing the goods.
You could also ask the retailer to repair or replace your item within six months of purchase.
Your rights against the retailer can last for up to six years, but after the first six months the onus is on you to prove a fault was present at the time you took ownership of the goods.
You can also use your guarantee or warranty if your product develops a fault.
The two things people done like the most are the stiff spring stick and the fact they have industrial standard, like long life micro switches which are heavy and very clicky loud. You get used to it...
One thing tho, these are not Competition Pro joysticks, they just look like them. The stick is more Zip Stik, as in it uses a round head to press the micro's where the real die-hard style Comp Pro's use a square block to hit the switches which made them less prone to pressing up/down if you wanted just left or right. The round head tend to press 2 switches more than you might like sometimes.
Also and as already said, these don't have the rubber neck and use a spring to keep the stick centre, just like a Zip Stik.
BTW if you find the left fire button rocks side to side just sat there..., your find the right one rocks up and down. It's not broken but a design thing with the right button turned 45 degrees as to why it goes up/down. A little lame they do this and more so from wear but once you know it's not a fault it soon goes away.
One real issue I have is the START or main menu button is in fact the small left button, I hold the stick in my hands and find I find I keep pressing it every now and then being right handed. Wish the small right button was on the left as I keep pausing the games when playing obviously. Oh, and all the wires have been soldered to the micro's which is a bit annoying if you want to change the switches to softer ones.
But yeah for anyone else wondering, to have one of these your want to have the original stick also plugged in so to make use of the extra buttons it has. Remember, the stick you start a game with will be set to joyport two and so a spare stick is handy for keeping this new one the main stick for both ports.
All in all, a solid stick that works and does the job - more like a stiff Zip than a Comp Pro tho.
