Got my C64 maxi and want to add some games on it; tried PC but it is too much of a hassle to have to swap playlist, plus the USB in the back (I could buy a low profile USB, I know), so I found TheC64 Maxi Game Tool, which looks great.
Tried it, created 10 games, and made the firmware (no delete of existing games, include backup of nand and games); although this is were the weirdness start
The C64 has the latest firmware available on the official site BTW.
When I try to flash the device, it goes on forever; and when it is done, it reboot in the original carousel, so none of the 10 games I added is there. On top of that I tried to load the games backup (which show as 6 mb tar file, while the nand files are about 200mb in total, not sure if that is correct), to test them in the vice included with the game tool; but only the first 5-6 works (the first vic20 game is the last working, from boulder dash onward).
Is it normal that the games backup is about 6 mb? I would expect the size being more than that; so I assume that the backup process was not done correctly, since only the first 5-6 games actually run on Vice from TheC64 Maxi Game Tool.
So I suspect the issue is the new firmware on the device; the videos I watched had the old firmware so maybe the new firmware does not work with TheC64 Maxi Game Tool ?
Does anyone use it on the maxi?

Thanks, Although for project carousel you need to have the USB in all the time; and you need to launch it every time you restart the machine; while I was hoping for a more permanent solution that would not rely on USB at all. That's why when I found the game tool I thought it was a great option.
So I assume that the tool hasn't been updated at all and it is abandoned, in favor of project carousel?

You can configure PCU to automatically start instead of the Carousel.

Just buy a mini USB and you will never notice it.
I would not go the firmware flashing route. It messed mine up and took some time to get it back.
If you use Game Manager on PC and export your game lists to PCUAE you can have the whole of Gamebase on there on Carousel mode.
With a bit of extra work you could also have the library working on Vice mode that is coming soon and have it boot direct to the machine then load as if it had a big library of disks - quite authentic experience when you turn the log screens off too.
