I designed a replacement port cover panel for the big machines, with space for a 3.5mm stereo jack for the serial port: www.thingiverse.com/thing:4666083The panel has a built-in power button that prints in-place. I kinda like it better than the original power button, to be honest. I use 3.5mm jacks for "TTL" (5V or 3.3V) serial ports now whenever possible, with the DTE TX on the tip, DTE RX on the ring and GND on the sleeve. This means I connect RX on the The C64 to the tip on the jack, and TX on the ring.

It's a nice idea. But wouldn't it make sense to also add an extra switch so that FEL mode can be activated without having to open the case?

I just haven't played with FEL mode at all so I didn't think of it. Anyway, the design includes OpenSCAD sources so it would be easy to add another hole for the switch.
