Hello all,
i just want to add the own game "Maniac Mansion" (in german language) and i still got the file for that. But there are two .d64-files, which i have to copy to my USB-stick. How do i have to rename these files to play them on my C64-mini?
Many thanks in advance for your help.
Greetings Oddball

Multi-disk Games Provided that the first disk of a multi-disk program works correctly, you can swap disks on THEC64 Mini at the required moment. For a two-disk program, the current procedure is as follows:
When you are asked to change or flip disks in the program, press the MENU button on the Joystick and save your current position in one of the four slots available to BASIC Exit to the Carousel and then remove the USB memory stick from THEC64 Mini Insert the USB memory stick into a computer and rename THEC64-drive8.d64 to something else memorable – let’s say MYDISK1.d64 Copy the second disk image file to the USB stick and name it THEC64-drive8.d64 Pop the USB stick back into THEC64 Mini, ensuring you’re still on the Carousel screen Launch BASIC from the Carousel Press the MENU button on the Joystick and load the position you saved earlier from one of the slots on THEC64 Mini Follow any on-screen instructions from your program regarding what to do next. If at some point the program needs the first disk again, follow the above instructions from step 1, but this time rename THEC64-drive8.d64 on the memory stick to something else (e.g. MYDISK2.d64), then rename the other disk image file to THEC64-drive8.d64).
As with all other aspects of loading programs, this will be significantly improved with our advanced loader.

I tried to run Autoduel and Battle tech, both 2 disk games and both didn't work. I have the latest FW with the advanced loader.

As Spinnernick wrote above, it should work, following same procedure. Official solution: thec64.com/troubleshooting/Multi-tape Games
Richard Bayliss gave us solution for multi-load tapes.

Hi, I'm have the same issue. Maniac Mansion cannot be played using Basic since the controller have to be plugged in Port 1... So it have to be played with the File Loader and indicating "J1" at the end of the file to be able to use Port 1 for the Joystick. But when using the File Loader, you cannot do the "save trick" and go load disk 2 after. So, what can be done to use a multi disk games (Maniac Mansion, Zac McKracken and others) that requires Joystick in Port 1 and disk switching? Thanks for your help!

yalaca1) Please, do not cross posting same thing. You opened a new thread with same question. 2) This is specific case with specific loader. There are workarounds, but not one is universal. Obviously, when you need to load part of the game with *specific* name, this name could not be renamed by adding "_J1" (or anythng else) to the end of filename. But, if the 2nd part is on the same disk - then it should not be a problem. This is why EasyFlash cartridge version exists, beside faster loading time (and you are advised to learn that procedure of conversion, if you really need to use many games splattered on more disks). The easiest solution is to plug 2 controllers (first before turning on Mini, 2nd right after). But it demands that you have 2 controllers (which is not so expensive or challenging demand). Another one solution is to use e.g. Action Replay cartridge, make save-state snapshot at "another point" (right after loading 2nd part) and save it (convert it) as new "prg" (for tape iirc). This solution has 2 flaws: You need to play 1st part of game at e.g. PC VICE before you'll be able to make this - to replay it again from Mini. Another problem is if game needs back 1st disk - it is possible that it should not work. Even if it does, loading again 2nd part from that point brings whole story to beginning - same problem again. The easiest solution is to find proper "release" that already solved that problem - in your particular case it exists, in many flavors. I will send it to you pm as an example.

Dear crispin, Sorry for the cross posting... I apologize. Not sure to understand all that you said, but my games usually need more than one switch of the disk. I found version of Maniac Mansion and Zac MacKracken all combined in one file and they work perfectly. Now I'm looking for Omni-play Horse Racing and Omni-play basketball. This last one is usually on 4 disks... I really hope a patch will come soon to fix that multi disk issue.

1) Find versions that works for you. I sent you Maniac Mansion and Zac MacKracken that should work for you, crt + prg+cjm for Mini (especially prepared). Most of other multi-disk games do not need "joystick switch". If they are, there is a big probability of other version of specific game that is already modified for "joystick 2 only". Hint: take a look at Vinny's JOYSTICK PORT 2 HACKS at Freeze64. 2) Acquire another controller, simple as that. When you get 2 controllers, one should be "joystick 1".
3) Use keyboard. By standard, Joystick 1 keys corresponds to C64 keyboard keys: UP=1, DOWN=LEFT ARROW, LEFT=CTRL, RIGHT=2, FIRE=SPACE. Obviously you need USB keyboard to attach, USB-hub is recommended. Joystick 1 port inputs are hardwired to those keys, it should work 100%.
4) Make your own version of particular game you need, that will not need to be multi-disk anymore, by - copying files to same .d81 or .d82 disk instead .d64; or
- make your own EasyFlash cartridge via NDEF and / or Draco Cart Maker (DCM) etc; or
- make your own cartridge/disk by using Action Replay (e.g. freeze + turbo save for each loaded part); or
- hack the joystick port switch by yourself.
NOW I HAVE TO ASK ONE QUESTION: OMNI-PLAY GAMES YOU MENTIONED ARE INTENDED FOR 2 OR MORE PLAYERS BY DEFAULT. BUT YOU WANT TO PLAY THEM (E.G. BASKETBALL) WITH ONLY ONE CONTROLLER? REALLY???

Thank you for all the tricks, I will surely try them. One other small question, if I want to put 2 Joystick (or 1 joystick and 1 keyboard) to the C64 Mini, how do I plug the USB key to play? I really need a USB hub then?
To answer your question, Omni-play games can be played alone, just need to specify that all the other controllers are the Computer in the in-game menu. As I remember from my childhood :-) I made Superstar soccer (omni-play game with only 1 disk) work and you can specify that.

Hi Everyone, I have C64 mini with the latest available firmware onboard and the same issue with Zak McKracken game. It has three .d64 files and I follow the procedure described on thec64.com : However, when I load the position that I saved earlier there is only an instruction "Put in side 1 and push joystick button". But after that nothing happens (probably it's the joystick port issue)... I've read the whole thread but it's still not clear for me how to deal with it I would highly appreciate if you could follow me step by step how to fix this. Many, many thanks!

Hi Everyone, I have C64 mini with the latest available firmware onboard and the same issue with Zak McKracken game. It has three .d64 files and I follow the procedure described on thec64.com: It is "old way" procedure, for old firmware. It works but it is more clumsy. However, when I load the position that I saved earlier there is only an instruction "Put in side 1 and push joystick button". But after that nothing happens (probably it's the joystick port issue)... 99% it is joystick port issue. Check carefully here: thec64.com/file-loader/You should rename filename of every disk so that it can load joystick port1 by default. e.g. "ZMdiskpart666.d64" to "ZMdiskpart666_J1.d64" "_J1" flag is for Joystick 1; "_AD" is for Accurate Disk-Drive etc. You can combine them. Beside, you don't have to restart Mini anymore (or change stick, or rename disk-image to "THEC64-drive8.d64" etc). Easier solution is described here: thec64community.online/post/1176/thread...but as gurce said, you should prefer cartridge versions of games (there are hundreds of multi-disk games already converted to .crt. Most of them works with MINI).
